BERLIN \u2014 Germany will further ease its lockdown by allowing religious services and visits to museums, playgrounds, exhibitions and zoos \u2014 but only subject to strict safety measures, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday.<\/p>\n

Bigger decisions on lifting the lockdown will not be made before next week, Merkel said at a press briefing following a three-hour videoconference with premiers of the countrys 16 regional states.<\/p>\n

By May 6, the federal government wants to have a broader plan drawn up for reopening all schools, daycare centres, resuming sporting activities and lifting other lockdown measures.<\/p>\n

Merkel said she was aware of the \u201chuge challenge\u201d posed for everyone by the coronavirus \u2014 a challenge for which \u201cwe have no template for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chancellor stressed she wanted to find a good solution to the \u201cprofound economic challenges\u201d but said decisions needed to be made \u201cstep by step\u201d and \u201ctodays talks were an interim step.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there is something I do not know, then caution is the best policy,\u201d Merkel said, adding it was key not to \u201crelapse into a more difficult phase\u201d with a higher infection rate.<\/p>\n

As of Thursday evening<\/a>, Germany had 162,123 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 6,518 deaths. Health Minister Jens Spahn said Wednesday that more than 120,000 people had recovered from the infection.<\/p>\n

Merkel said she wanted \u201cone strategy and one goal for all of Germany\u201d but, she noted, \u201cwe are a federal country and there will be regional differences.\u201d<\/p>\n

By law, Germanys regional states may make their own decisions on many lockdown measures, and some have taken a stricter approach than others.<\/p>\n
