{"id":143583,"date":"2020-04-25T17:51:07","date_gmt":"2020-04-25T17:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/new-british-ambassador-urges-swift-us-uk-trade-negotiations\/"},"modified":"2020-04-25T17:51:07","modified_gmt":"2020-04-25T17:51:07","slug":"new-british-ambassador-urges-swift-us-uk-trade-negotiations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/new-british-ambassador-urges-swift-us-uk-trade-negotiations\/","title":{"rendered":"New British ambassador urges swift US-UK trade negotiations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK \u2014 Britain says it is ready to start trade negotiations with the United States but is waiting for agreement from the Trump administration on whether those negotiations can now be conducted virtually.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Pierce, Britains new ambassador to the United States, told POLITICO that moving quickly on the bilateral trade negotiations would \u201cput a bit of optimism into the world economy,\u201d and that Britain is \u201cactively discussing\u201d the matter with the U.S. Trade Representative and Commerce Department. Pierce said American negotiators are \u201cfamously tough on trade\u201d but that Britain \u201ccertainly intends to fight our corner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce also said the U.K. will fiercely resist the \u201cbackward step\u201d of protectionism as a way of dealing with the supply chain weaknesses exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing \u201cstrategic vulnerabilities in supply\u201d can coexist with \u201ckeeping the global economy open and keeping trade flowing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations between the U.S and U.K. were slated to begin in March, but were disrupted by coronavirus lockdowns and travel restrictions. Britain is conducting separate trade negotiations with the European Union via videoconference.<\/p>\n<p>On China \u2014 the source of a public split between the U.S. and U.K. over the role of Huawei in 5G networks \u2014 Pierce said Britain and America are aligned on freedom of navigation and human rights issues, as well as internet regulation.
