{"id":143557,"date":"2020-04-24T17:40:04","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T17:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/eus-barnier-slams-uk-for-lack-of-progress-in-brexit-talks\/"},"modified":"2020-04-24T17:40:04","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T17:40:04","slug":"eus-barnier-slams-uk-for-lack-of-progress-in-brexit-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/eus-barnier-slams-uk-for-lack-of-progress-in-brexit-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"EUs Barnier slams UK for lack of progress in Brexit talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.K. cannot refuse to extend the Brexit transition period and at the same time slow down discussion on \u201cimportant areas,\u201d EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said at a press conference Friday after the second round of negotiations on a future EU-U.K. trade deal concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Barnier said that there must be \u201cparallel progress\u201d on all subjects in the talks, especially given the limited timeframe in which to reach an agreement \u2014 the transition period ends on December 31.<\/p>\n<p>He added that aim of \u201ctangible progress\u201d has only been \u201cpartially\u201d met after this second round, which happened virtually. The two sides must decide by June 1 on whether enough progress has been made, or if an extension to the transition period is required.<\/p>\n<p>Barnier mentioned four areas in particular \u201cin which the progress this week was disappointing,\u201d stressing how important these are for the EU. These were: negotiations about a level playing field, the overall governance of the future partnership, the criminal and security partnership, and fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>On fisheries, he said that \u201cthe EU will not any agree to any future economic partnership that does not include a balanced, sustainable and long-terms solution on fisheries. That should be crystal clear to the U.K.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clock is ticking,\u201d he added, and \u201cbarely eight months remain\u201d to negotiate a future deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe agreed with Boris Johnson to hold a high-level conference in June to take stock of the progress,\u201d Barnier said. \u201cBefore that, we have only two round of negotiations left in the weeks of 11th of May and the week of 1st of June.
