{"id":143290,"date":"2020-04-13T23:50:56","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T23:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/european-countries-need-to-protect-their-companies-from-chinese-takeovers-says-eu-commissioner\/"},"modified":"2020-04-13T23:50:56","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T23:50:56","slug":"european-countries-need-to-protect-their-companies-from-chinese-takeovers-says-eu-commissioner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/european-countries-need-to-protect-their-companies-from-chinese-takeovers-says-eu-commissioner\/","title":{"rendered":"European countries need to protect their companies from Chinese takeovers, says EU Commissioner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2020\/04\/13\/european-countries-need-to-protect-their-companies-from-chinese-takeovers-says-eu-commissi\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Euronews-<\/a> European countries should buy stakes in companies to counter the threat of Chinese takeovers, the Commission has said, part of the EUs attempts to protect its businesses amid the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>It has been long feared by some that certain companies maybe targeted by Chinese rivals, but the sharp economic downturn caused by the recent outbreak and steep falls in share prices across the continent have increased the vulnerability of businesses for potential foreign bids.<\/p>\n<p>Margrethe Vestager, European Competition Commissioner, told the Financial Times: \u201cWe dont have any issues of states acting as market participants if need be \u2014 if they provide shares in a company, if they want to prevent a takeover of this kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts very important that one is aware that there is a real risk that businesses that are vulnerable can be the object of a takeover,\u201d Vestager said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation now really underlines the need so we work really intensively.
