The Local-<\/a> Criminal organisations in Italy are distributing food and ordering interest-free lending to the needy to try to extend their influence, Italian anti-mafia author Roberto Saviano has warned.[contfnewc]<\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s mafia groups are also poised to snatch up struggling businesses as the country \u2014 which is in crisis over the deadly coronavirus pandemic \u2014 awaits European funding to boost its battered economy, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Europe doesn\u2019t intervene soon the multiplication of mafioso money that\u2019s already in Germany, France, Spain, Holland, Belgium will be unrestrained,\u201d Saviano told journalists on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Saviano (pictured below), best known for his non-fiction book \u201cGomorrah\u201d about southern Italy\u2019s Camorra clan, is an expert on mafia groups and how they have successfully expanded beyond drugs and other illegal activity to worm their way into otherwise legitimate businesses and sectors across the world.<\/p>\n

At the most basic level, criminal organisations are providing groceries for the poorest Italians, Saviano said.<\/p>\n

Moreover, in Italy\u2019s southern capital Naples, moneylenders, on orders of the Camorra, have cancelled interest on debt, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what purpose? For favours,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

That could be votes, or allowing someone to put their name on a contract as a front for the mafia, he added.<\/p>\n

Saviano, who currently lives in New York, has been under police protection after receiving death threats following the release of \u201cGomorrah\u201d.<\/p>\n

The book, which details how the Neapolitan crime syndicate Camorra profits from multiple economic sectors from fashion to waste recycling, was later turned into a film and a TV series.<\/p>\n

Saviano\u2019s comments came the same day an opinion piece in Germany\u2019s Die Welt newspaper warned that if Chancellor Angela Merkel did not \u201cstand firm\u201d and resist Italy\u2019s appeals for so-called coronabonds, or shared eurozone debt, the mafia would benefit.<\/p>\n

After weeks of wrangling, EU finance ministers agreed a 500-billion-euro rescue for European countries hit hard by the coronavirus, but put aside the demands from Italy and France for pooled borrowing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Italy, the mafia is just waiting for a new shower of money from Brussels,\u201d wrote Die Welt columnist Christoph Schiltz, warning against Europe handing out funds with \u201cno limit\u201d and \u201cwithout any control\u201d.<\/p>\n

The comments published in Die Welt were immediately criticised by Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio who told Rai1 TV the opinion piece was \u201cshameful and unacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked about the article, Saviano said its premise was \u201creasonable,\u201d but misinformed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the opposite,\u201d Saviano said. \u201cThe mafia is only waiting for a crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Failed companies, he said, will suddenly find themselves with new mafia-linked partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou become a partner, you enter the business,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like someone comes in with a gun, it\u2019s their financial consultants who at a certain point say, \u2018With these partners we\u2019ll allocate, with these partners we\u2019ll do our banking\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is having a raided economy,\u201d Saviano said.<\/p>\n

Late last month, Saviano warned in an interview with Italian daily La Repubblica that the breadth of economic sectors infiltrated by the various mafias included many of those central to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere have they invested the last few decades? Multi-service companies (canteens, cleaning, disinfection), waste recycling, transportation, funeral homes, oil and food distribution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how they\u2019ll make money,\u201d he told the paper.
