President Donald Trump has named National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency general counsel Thomas Monheim as acting intelligence community inspector general, a day after he fired Michael Atkinson, telling reporters at the White House that Atkinson mishandled the whistleblower<\/a> complaint that led to the first partisan impeachment<\/a> of a president and his subsequent acquittal.<\/p>\n

Monheims appointment was announced by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in a statement on Twitter, shortly before the president said at a White House CCP virus<\/a> Task Force briefing on April 5 that he had fired Atkinson.<\/p>\n

\u201cThomas Monheim has been named the Acting IC Inspector General,\u201d the DNI said. \u201cMonheim is a career intelligence professional and retired colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserves who has served our nation in a wide variety of roles throughout his distinguished career.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his time with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Monheim provided legal advice to \u201cenable NGAs mission consistent with the Constitution and law,\u201d the DNI said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis military service includes time as a prosecutor, defense counsel, military judge, and Deputy General Counsel of the White House Military Office,\u201d it continued. \u201cHe mobilized for 9 months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and for another 9 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump on Saturday<\/a> described Atkinson as a \u201ctotal disgrace,\u201d as he defended his decision to remove him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThats my decision. I have the absolute right,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

Trump noted that the anonymous whistleblowers complaint didnt have to be rushed and that Atkinson himself determined that there were indications of political bias by the complainant.<\/p>\n

In a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee on April 3, Trump said that he would remove Atkinson from office \u201ceffective 30 days from today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs is the case with regard to other positions where I, as president, have the power of appointment, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, it is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general,\u201d Trump said in the letter.<\/p>\n
