President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was using the Defense Production Act to fight the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus\u2014commonly known as the novel coronavirus\u2014two days after he announced he was signing an executive order invoking the measure<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump on Wednesday said he was signing the new order \u201cjust in case\u201d his administration needed its powers to expand the supply of resources to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters in Washington on Friday, Trump said he was using the act.<\/p>\n

\u201cI invoked the Defense Production Act and last night, we put it into gear,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need certain equipment that the states are unable to get by themselves. So were invoking it to use the powers of the federal government to get things that they need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two items that the government is going to send to states: masks and ventilators.<\/p>\n

The federal government has millions of masks and the act will allow it to distribute masks directly to the states.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe act is very good for things like this,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Millions of additional masks will be needed during the outbreak, officials said earlier in the week.<\/p>\n

Another aspect of the act (pdf<\/a>) lets the government force private businesses to manufacture medical supplies and equipment and to make government contracts the top priority.<\/p>\n

The act also gives the president the power to authorize loan guarantees and order the take over or enhancement of private industrial facilities.<\/p>\n

More than two dozen senators urged Trump earlier in the month to invoke the Korea War-era program to increase production of masks, ventilators, and respirators. Expanding hospital capacity could also be done, the lawmakers said.<\/p>\n

The 1950 act \u201cauthorizes the president to strengthen capacity and supply in extraordinary circumstances,\u201d Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts used in times of war, but we must mobilize as if it is a time of war when it comes to hospitals, beds, supplies, equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n
