If those efforts get clicks, it could deflate future car shows \u2014 with carmakers previously paying upward of \u20ac1 million for glitzy stands and prominent spots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a case of <em>force majeure<\/em> and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva,\u201d said Maurice Turrettini, chairman of the foundation board that runs the Geneva show.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Those traditional auto shows have been hit by dwindling interest.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ferdinand Dudenh\u00f6ffer, a professor at the Institute for Customer Insight at St. Gallen University, estimates carmakers paid a total of \u20ac100 million to take part in the show \u2014 money that wont be refunded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a great danger that the short-term cancellation \u2026 will now completely cut the thread,\u201d said Dudenh\u00f6ffer.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to stay relevant, the Geneva International Motor Show organizers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gims.swiss\/?utm_campaign=9407211&amp;utm_content=53848307372&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=SmartFocus&amp;utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=e86be55a1c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_02_05_59&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-e86be55a1c-189906581\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">livestreamed<\/a> the presentation of their Car of the Year award on Monday afternoon. That gong went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caroftheyear.org\/?utm_campaign=9415280&amp;utm_content=53856567224&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=SmartFocus\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peugeot 208<\/a>, even though the French automaker wasnt signed up to show its wares at the physical show.<\/p>\n<p>The European car calendar is dominated by two events \u2014 Geneva in the spring and a bigger September bash that alternates between Paris and, until now, Frankfurt.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/GettyImages-1204736882-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Peuget 208 won Car of the Year honors at this years show | Pool photo by Salvatore Di Nolfi\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>But those traditional shows have been hit by dwindling interest. In 2015, the Frankfurt show saw 930,000 people visit. In 2017 that was down to 810,000, and last September it was down to just 550,000, with some big carmaking names dropping out. That prompted Germanys auto lobby group, the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), to look at Berlin, Munich and Hamburg for the 2021 event.<\/p>\n<p>The Geneva show had been filled with growing numbers of catering stands, vintage cars and car parts-makers as mainstream automaker presentations began to thin out. This time around some 14 major automakers \u2014 among them big beasts such as Jaguar, Nissan, Volvo and Opel \u2014 were not registered to showcase their vehicles.<\/p>\n<h3>Curtain call<\/h3>\n<p>But it isnt only about visitor numbers.
