{"id":142066,"date":"2020-02-23T15:10:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-23T15:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/griveaux-scandal-revives-frances-will-to-regulate-social-media\/"},"modified":"2020-02-23T15:10:23","modified_gmt":"2020-02-23T15:10:23","slug":"griveaux-scandal-revives-frances-will-to-regulate-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/griveaux-scandal-revives-frances-will-to-regulate-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Griveaux scandal revives Frances will to regulate social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS \u2014 The sexting scandal that brought down one of President Emmanuel Macrons closest allies has prompted French lawmakers to call for a crackdown on social media.<\/p>\n<p>A small group of Macrons La R\u00e9publique En Marche (LREM) MPs will mull over a legislative initiative \u201cin the coming months\u201d to improve regulation, MP Bruno Bonnell told POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>LREM candidate for Paris mayor Benjamin Griveaux stepped down last week after sexually explicit content attributed to him went viral, thanks to mass sharing through social media accounts and online groups largely using pseudonyms.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians from all sides of the spectrum expressed support for Griveaux, condemning social media and heavily critisizing the infringement of privacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is high time to regulate the torrents of mud that pour out on social media,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gerard_larcher\/status\/1228308922358018051\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted <\/a>Conservative G\u00e9rard Larcher, president of the Senate.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> French law has prevented full anonymity since 2004, forcing digital service providers to hold data.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>LREM party members have castigated the \u201cdeviances that anonymity allows,\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrunoBonnellOff\/status\/1228453263873363978\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnells words<\/a>, \u201clike slander or defamation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next three weeks will be quite busy due to the pension reform vote but we will re-discuss [the legislative framework for regulating social media] for sure in April,\u201d he added, referring to informal talks within LREM ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the partys most senior members \u2014 including President of the LREMs group at the Assembly Gilles Le Gendre, President of the Assembly Richard Ferrand, Griveaux spokesman Sylvain Maillard and former Minister of Ecological Transition Fran\u00e7ois de Rugy \u2014 have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contrepoints.org\/2020\/02\/21\/364845-reguler-internet-ou-etre-responsable-de-ses-actes-un-choix-politique#fnref-364845-4\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made clear<\/a> that they support strengthening internet regulation in interviews on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LCI\/status\/1229003818039480326\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">national network LCI<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lejdd.fr\/Politique\/ferrand-sur-laffaire-griveaux-les-delateurs-doivent-etre-montres-du-doigt-et-punis-pas-leurs-victimes-3949771\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">le JDD newspaper<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicsenat.fr\/article\/parlementaire\/affaire-griveaux-est-il-necessaire-d-adapter-le-cadre-legislatif-180735\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe 1 <\/a>radio.<\/p>\n<p>MPs have also approached the French government to discuss new proposals, one such member told POLITICO.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/GettyImages-1200684889-714x489.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Griveaux stood down after sexually explicit material attributed to him went viral | Lionel Bonaventure\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>French law has prevented full anonymity since 2004, forcing digital service providers to hold data that \u201callows the identification of anyone who contributed to the creation of content or one of the contents of the services for which they are providers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The publication online of private images has also been punishable by law since 2016; individuals are subject to a two-year prison sentence and a fine of \u20ac60,000 for distributing this type of content, with an increase in severity for invasions of privacy of a sexual nature. A sentence was already pronounced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextinpact.com\/brief\/revenge-porn---une-femme-condamnee-pour-violation-de-la-vie-privee-6752.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in November 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal emerged as Parliamentarians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/french-national-assembly-approves-hate-speech-law-in-second-reading\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">process a draft hate speech law<\/a> for final adoption in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>Russian artist Piotr Pavlenski \u2014 the author of the blog post that made the material public \u2014 was charged on Tuesday evening for infringement of privacy and publication of sexual content without consent.
