In a boost to his reelection efforts, President Donald Trump appeared at NASCARs most prestigious race on Feb. 16 as the grand marshal, who is given the honor of commanding drivers to start their engines.<\/p>\n

Trump made a dramatic entrance to the Daytona International Speedway riding in the presidential limousine, known as \u201cThe Beast,\u201d after giving thousands of fans a flyover by Air Force One. The annual Daytona 500 auto race takes place in the crucial political swing state of Florida.<\/p>\n

Thousands cheered, and a band played patriotic music when Air Force One flew over the famed track. Donald Trump Jr. and former NASCAR Chairman Brian France, who recruited several drivers to attend a Georgia rally for Trump when he was a candidate, were also on the presidential jet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tens of thousands of patriots here today have come for the fast cars and the world-class motorsports,\u201d Trump said in his grand marshal speech<\/a>, kicking off the race. \u201cBut NASCAR fans never forget that no matter who wins the race, what matters most is God, family, and country.\u201d<\/p>\n

First Lady Melania Trump stood by the presidents side as he gave his remarks, during which he praised Gold Star families and thanked their loved ones, who \u201cmade the supreme sacrifice to defend our freedom and our flag.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president gave a shout-out to the U.S. military and highlighted his efforts to rebuild it. His new budget requests $740.5 billion<\/a> for national defense in 2021, an increase of $2.5 billion over the 2020 enacted level.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo every service member and veteran here today, as commander-in-chief of the greatest fighting force on the planet\u2014a force that just spent $2.5 trillion on rebuilding our military\u2014I want to thank you for your service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The president said the drivers are competing for \u201cpure American glory.\u201d He described the Daytona 500 as \u201ca legendary display of roaring engines, soaring spirits, and the American skill, speed, and power that weve been hearing about for so many years.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later kicked off the race and bellowed out the iconic line, \u201cGentlemen, start your engines<\/a>!\u201d Trump then, for the second time, took a few laps around the Daytona International Speedway in his presidential motorcade, this time leading the NASCAR drivers.<\/p>\n

About 100,000 people were expected to attend this years race, and millions more watched on television. About 9 million people took in last years race on TV.<\/p>\n
