Frances consumer protection body hit Apple with a \u20ac25 million fine Friday for failing to inform consumers that updating their iPhones operating system would slow down the device.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they couldnt go back to an older version of their operating system, a lot of consumers were forced to change their batteries and even buy a new phone,\u201d said<\/a> the directorate general for competition, consumers and fraud control (DGCCRF), which is attached to the ministry of economy.<\/p>\n

The case stems from a complaint by a non-governmental organization fighting against planned obsolescence.<\/p>\n

The DGCCRFs inquiry did not find evidence of \u201cplanned obsolescence in the legal sense of the term,\u201d an official from the ministry of economy told Le Parisien<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But consumers were not informed that their phones could be slowed down by the iOS update, so Apple was found guilty of misleading commercial practice by omission.<\/p>\n
