Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), considered a possible swing vote in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, said Feb. 3 that she \u201ccannot vote to convict\u201d the president as she called the foundation of the inquiry process \u201crotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of a vote on whether to convict or acquit Trump on Wednesday, Feb. 5, Murkowski told the Senate floor on Monday that while she believed the presidents actions were \u201cshameful and wrong,\u201d removing Trump from office would be \u201cthe political death penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot vote to convict,\u201d she said. \u201cThe constitution provides for impeachment, but does not demand it in all instances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski had previously been considered a possible vote against the acquittal of the president. However, she criticized the House investigation as rushed \u201csimply to meet an artificial, self-imposed deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voicing her frustration over the House and Senates handling of the impeachment inquiry, she referred to the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton in 1999, which she described as a fair, honest, and transparent process. Prior presidential impeachments\u2014unlike Trumps\u2014she said, resulted from years of investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, she said, members who were present during the Clinton trial took the exact opposite stance to what they take today. She added: \u201cThat level of hypocrisy is astounding, even for a place like Washington D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House failed in its responsibilities. And the Senate should be ashamed by the rank partisanship that has been on display here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot be the greatest deliberative body, when we kick things off by issuing letters to the media, instead of coming together to set the parameters of the trial and negotiate in good faith on how we should proceed,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd for all the talk of impartiality, it is clear to me that few in this chamber approached this with a genuinely open mind.<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski added that she made up her mind not to convict Trump after several days of deliberation over the \u201crotted foundation of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this led to the conclusion \u2026 that there would be no fair trial.
