{"id":141525,"date":"2020-02-04T16:40:28","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/poland-wants-to-go-beyond-eu-on-5g-security-says-minister\/"},"modified":"2020-02-04T16:40:28","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:40:28","slug":"poland-wants-to-go-beyond-eu-on-5g-security-says-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/poland-wants-to-go-beyond-eu-on-5g-security-says-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Poland wants to go beyond EU on 5G security, says minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Poland plans to restrict \u201chigh-risk\u201d 5G telecom vendors in ways that go beyond a series of security controls proposed by the European Union, a minister told POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>The EU last week spelled out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-eu-huawei-5g-china-cybersecurity-toolbox-explained\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a range of options<\/a> for countries to secure their future networks amid a transatlantic debate about 5G security and Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE.<\/p>\n<p>But Poland, a close ally of the United States, will introduce tougher controls that would \u201climit the use of [telecom equipment] vendors who are suspicious or who are not necessarily trustworthy, or who do not stick to the security standards,\u201d Digital Minister Marek Zag\u00f3rski said during an interview in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>Poland wants to \u201cbecome independent from one vendor,\u201d added the minister, who is a member of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party. Local telecom operators procured Huawei equipment for their rollout of previous generations of internet networks, but the government has since turned skeptical of relying on Chinese kit.<\/p>\n<p>In a policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/united-states-estonia-joint-declaration-5g-security\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ctoolbox\u201d unveiled last week<\/a>, the European Union recommended that EU capitals keep out \u201chigh-risk\u201d vendors of 5G gears by imposing new measures on operators or blocking telecom contracts via a national security review, among other options. Those rules are widely understood as tools for countries to use in dealing with perceived security risks linked to Chinese telecom vendors Huawei and ZTE.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> The planned 5G security measures coincide with a tightening of security ties with the United States over the past year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Zag\u00f3rski said that Poland was implementing the EUs proposals, \u201cbut not only those, because some of them will also exceed the existing set offered by the toolbox\u201d document.<\/p>\n<p>Poland is working on a telecom security law that will further toughen controls, in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/legislacja.rcl.gov.pl\/docs\/\/522\/12329501\/12658511\/12658512\/dokument435747.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legislation<\/a> based on the EU document that has already been drafted, he added.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Warsaw <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/9a90e16d903947709998dd7a2dde8733\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signed an agreement<\/a> with the U.S. government pledging to only allow \u201ctrusted\u201d suppliers into 5G networks. The minister said his government was \u201ctranslating it into legal provisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Estonia and Romania have signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/united-states-estonia-joint-declaration-5g-security\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similar deals<\/a> with the U.S. government in past months, as Washington sought to have Huawei banned from the European 5G market in the past year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/h_55437131-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In September, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence signed an agreement pledging to only allow \u201ctrusted\u201d suppliers into 5G networks | Tomas Gzell\/EPA-EFE<\/p>\n<p>Zag\u00f3rski said that in the past year \u201cthere was a lot of fuss about Huawei and other Chinese vendors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, he added, the most important change was that \u201cwe started speaking about the telecommunication network security as such\u201d \u2014 something the minister called a \u201csplendid success\u201d of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Polish authorities last year also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/poland-arrests-huawei-orange-executives-on-suspicion-of-spying-report\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested two telecom officials<\/a> in an investigation into alleged espionage on behalf of Chinese security services, one of whom, Wang Weijing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/huawei-poland-spying\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worked for Huawei<\/a> in Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The planned 5G security measures coincide with a tightening of security ties with the United States over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Warsaw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/warsaw-poland-andrzej-duda-to-donald-trump-lets-make-a-military-deal-without-nato\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asked the U.S. government to establish a permanent military base<\/a> in the country, while top U.S. officials including President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and State Secretary Mike Pompeo have all made visits to Poland.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> The Polish government agreed to drop plans to adopt its own digital tax and wait for discussions at the OECD to conclude.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In January, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/polish-pm-mateusz-morawiecki-calls-for-stronger-us-eu-ties-criticizes-anti-americanism\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticized<\/a> what he described as growing anti-Americanism among EU countries.<\/p>\n<p>Without America, he said, Europe could not survive \u201chybrid attacks from Russia and the growing influence of China.\u201dRead More \u2013 Source<\/p>\n<p>[contf] [contfnew]         <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/snap.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/politico-logo.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">politico<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>[contfnewc] [contfnewc]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poland plans to restrict \u201chigh-risk\u201d 5G telecom vendors in w..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":141526,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[50],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-141525","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
