{"id":141521,"date":"2020-02-04T16:00:22","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/boris-johnson-uk-will-not-undercut-eu-competition-rules\/"},"modified":"2020-02-04T16:00:22","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:00:22","slug":"boris-johnson-uk-will-not-undercut-eu-competition-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/boris-johnson-uk-will-not-undercut-eu-competition-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Boris Johnson: UK will not undercut EU competition rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 Boris Johnson insisted the U.K. will not engage in a \u201crace to the bottom\u201d on competition standards after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech at the grand painted hall of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the U.K. prime minister said he wants to \u201creassure\u201d Brussels over fears Britain will undercut the EU on working rights, environmental standards and state aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not engage in some cut-throat race to the bottom,\u201d he told an audience of ambassadors and business leaders about the trade deal he hopes to strike with the bloc and other nations around the world. \u201cWe are not leaving the EU to undermine European standards, we will not engage in any kind of dumping, whether commercial, or social, or environmental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Johnson refused outright to sign up to so-called level playing field rules that govern competition standards across the bloc. \u201cThere is no need for a free-trade agreement to involve accepting EU rules on competition policy, subsidies, social protection, the environment, or anything similar, any more than the EU should be obliged to accept U.K. rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a spokesman for the prime minster later suggested an agreement on competition rules is possible \u2014 but would not require the two sides writing any such agreements into law. The government also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/publications\/written-questions-answers-statements\/written-statement\/Commons\/2020-02-03\/HCWS86\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published a rough list of its negotiating objectives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nJohnson insisted the U.K. wants to negotiate fishing quotas on an annual basis.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The spokesman suggested the outcome could mirror the EU deal with Canada, which specifically notes that EU and Canadian working rights and environmental protections are integrated into the deal.
