DAVOS, Switzerland\u2014President Donald Trump this week is expected to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF), a high-profile summit in the Swiss mountain town of Davos that brings together world leaders, business elites, economists, and celebrities from around the globe.<\/p>\n

Trump went in 2018, but had to cancel his trip in 2019 due to a record-long partial-government shutdown.<\/p>\n

The economic summit in the Alpine town will run from Jan. 21 through Jan. 24, marking its 50th anniversary. As in previous years, the forum will focus on current economic and social issues to help shape global, regional, and industry agendas.<\/p>\n

Trump is scheduled to attend the summit Jan. 21\u201322. Hell deliver a speech on the events opening day, a few hours before his impeachment trial is expected to begin in the Senate on Jan. 21.<\/p>\n

This will be Trumps second visit to the annual gathering. He is expected to use his Davos speech as an opportunity to hail his trade and economic victories.<\/p>\n

Similar to his 2018 speech, Trump is poised to highlight his tax reform and regulatory rollback to deliver a message to investors that \u201cAmerica is open for business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want those business leaders all to come to the United States,\u201d he told reporters Jan. 16 at the White House. \u201cWe have tremendous, powerful room for growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the global slowdown, the U.S. economy defied recession fears in 2019 and entered the longest expansion in American history. The United States is expected to be the only Group of Seven country that will post growth above 2 percent in 2019, according to economists<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the global economy recorded its slowest expansion in the past decade, according to the International Monetary Fund. Trade tensions, poor business climate, and country-specific weaknesses in emerging markets were a significant drag on global growth in 2019.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Trump pitched his America First agenda, telling global elites that the United States would \u201cno longer turn a blind eye\u201d to unfair trade practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot have free and open trade if some countries exploit the system at the expense of others,\u201d Trump said in his first Davos speech.<\/p>\n

At this years event, however, hes expected to take a softer tone on trade and protectionism after he signed an initial trade deal with China last week. In addition, the Senate on Jan. 16 passed the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement, sending it to the presidents desk for his expected signature.<\/p>\n

\u201cHes got a great message to deliver there in Davos,\u201d Kellyanne Conway, a top adviser to Trump, told reporters on Jan. 16.<\/p>\n

She said Trump is likely to \u201ctake on the perils of socialism\u201d and address several issues, including the stock market, the global economy, and whether NATO members are meeting their defense spending requirements.<\/p>\n

Key Theme: Climate Change<\/h2>\n

Each years forum has a theme, and this years meeting will focus on the concept of \u201cstakeholders for a sustainable and cohesive world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Political and business leaders will tackle climate and environmental threats during the summit. As in 2019, Greta Thunberg, the 17-year-old Swedish climate activist, is expected to attend the forum and ramp up pressure on businesses and governments.<\/p>\n

The leaders will address other pressing issues, according to the WEF<\/a>, such as income inequality, long-term debt burden, technology war, rising geopolitical conflicts, and workforce development.<\/p>\n
