{"id":141080,"date":"2020-01-20T04:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T04:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/trump-defenders-president-cannot-be-removed-in-senate-for-abuse-of-power\/"},"modified":"2020-01-20T04:00:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T04:00:20","slug":"trump-defenders-president-cannot-be-removed-in-senate-for-abuse-of-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/trump-defenders-president-cannot-be-removed-in-senate-for-abuse-of-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Defenders: President Cannot Be Removed in Senate for Abuse of Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the Senate impeachment trial looming over the head of President Donald Trump, several of his defenders said he cannot be impeached for abuse of power.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz, a high-profile criminal attorney, told <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-19-20-rep-adam-schiff-alan\/story?id=68384777\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC News<\/a> \u201cThis Week\u201d Sunday that Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Curtis, in his defense of former President Andrew Johnson, argued that abuse of power doesnt constitute an impeachable offense. Dershowitz confirmed Friday that he will join Trumps legal team and will attempt to \u201cdefend the integrity of the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I am making an argument much like the argument made by the great Justice Curtis,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to call them absurdist is to, you know, insult one of the greatest jurists in American history. The argument is a strong one. The Senate should hear it.\u201d His \u201cabsurdist\u201d reference was a response to House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who said that to claim abuse of power isnt impeachable is an \u201cabsurdist position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis \u201cargued, very successfully, winning the case, that you needed proof of an actual crime. It neednt be a statutory crime, but it has to be criminal behavior, criminal in nature,\u201d Dershowitz added. \u201cAnd the allegations in the Johnson case were much akin to the allegations here \u2026 and that lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/01\/18\/Alan-Dershowitz-and-Ken-Starr-1200x732.jpg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" alt=\"Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr\"\/><figcaption><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/01\/18\/Alan-Dershowitz-and-Ken-Starr-1200x732.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr\"\/><\/figcaption><\/a> (L) Attorney Alan Dershowitz. (Lauren Victoria Burke\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<p>In a separate interview on <a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/2001\/19\/sotu.01.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a> Sunday, Dershowitz said that if his argument is successful, it would negate the need for any witnesses.
