{"id":141078,"date":"2020-01-20T03:40:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T03:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/thierry-breton-european-companies-must-be-ones-profiting-from-european-data\/"},"modified":"2020-01-20T03:40:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T03:40:20","slug":"thierry-breton-european-companies-must-be-ones-profiting-from-european-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/thierry-breton-european-companies-must-be-ones-profiting-from-european-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Thierry Breton: European companies must be ones profiting from European data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MUNICH \u2014 The EU must ensure that Europes own companies are the ones capitalizing on data generated within its borders, and is working on measures to do this, according to the EUs top digital strategy official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ambition is that European data will be used for European companies in priority, for us to create value in Europe,\u201d Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said Sunday during a speech at the DLD technology conference in Munich, filling in for Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who had canceled her appearance to attend a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-iran-nuclear-deal-desperation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">peace conference<\/a> in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>The EUs new political leadership, which took office last December, will also use its five-year mandate to push for clear and harmonized rules across the bloc, defining how companies can work with digital information, Breton added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can count on me. I will be extremely clear on the rules that we will apply on companies and entities processing our data in Europe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His announcement comes as the EU is set to kick off several initiatives aimed at boosting the blocs digital competitiveness, including a strategy for how to better share data across Europe as well as legislation for artificial intelligence technology. These measures are part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-digital-technological-sovereignty-facebook-google-amazon-ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a broader push by von der Leyen<\/a> to bolster the blocs \u201cdigital sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the rollout of fifth-generation mobile internet across Europe, Breton dismissed concerns that the Continent is lagging behind other regions worldwide and stressed that the new technology requires tougher security rules than previous generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is something new, its a new architecture,\u201d he said, adding that within the next two weeks, Brussels would release \u201ca toolbox\u201d with guidelines spelling out how national governments can best manage and mitigate those security risks.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Breton dismissed calls to exclude specific companies or manufacturers from the 5G rollout \u2014 such as Chinas telecom equipment-maker Huawei.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are welcoming everybody.
