A quick trade deal between the EU and the U.K. is possible \u2014 but that solely depends on the Brits, according to Am\u00e9lie de Montchalin, Frances state secretary for EU affairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more reasonable are the demands of the U.K., the more reasonably we can agree\u201d in the 11-month timeline set out by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, de Montchalin told POLITICOs Brussels Playbook<\/a> in an interview. \u201cIt will now depend on how the U.K. presents its negotiation strategy and objectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Montchalin said that \u201cthe more divergence\u201d the Brits seek from the EU, the longer talks will take, and \u201cthe less frictionless\u201d will be the U.K.s access to the EUs market.<\/p>\n

And she warned against overly prescriptive deadlines for getting a deal done.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not ready to sacrifice the content, quality and seriousness of an agreement just because we put ourselves in a straight jacket of a too-tight calendar,\u201d she said. \u201cBy signing an agreement, we will start a long journey. If we need six more months, its worth taking them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.K. prime minister said earlier this week<\/a> that it is \u201cepically likely\u201d that Britain will strike a comprehensive trade deal with the EU by his deadline of the end of the year, but admitted: \u201cYou always have to budget for complete failure of common sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quid pro quo will be key to striking a deal, de Montchalin indicated.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, what counts is the capacity to reassure our companies and citizens that there will be reciprocity,\u201d she said, listing the environment as one example. \u201cWe just agreed in Europe on carbon neutrality by 2050.Read More \u2013 Source<\/a>
