Former New York City Mayor and presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg pledged Wednesday during a campaign event in Chicago to make \u201cmajor investments\u201d in community colleges to prepare students to meet the labor demands of new industries.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg rolled out the first part of his \u201cAll-In Economy\u201d agenda<\/a> on Wednesday. The plan includes a wide range of proposals that centers around stimulating job growth and increasing wages.<\/p>\n

When it comes to education, Bloomberg told his audience<\/a> at a community college on the South Side of Chicago that he would make \u201ceducation and training a national priority\u201d in order to better prepare workers for a rapidly evolving employment landscape. \u201cOver the past few decades, technology has eliminated millions of good-paying jobs across our country, and thats a trend that is continuing,\u201d he argued, adding that American workers should be made ready for the emerging new jobs, rather than expecting the government to bring those old, diminishing jobs back<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite not giving specific figures or explaining how his plan will be financed, Bloomberg pledged to invest in \u201cstates, community and technical colleges and others\u201d to build career-training systems and programs \u201cproviding skills and credentials employers identify as priorities for hiring for good jobs.\u201d He said his vice presidential pick would be assigned to oversee the education reforms.<\/p>\n

In his plan, Bloomberg makes general promises such as sending \u201cbillions of dollars\u201d to \u201ccommunities across the country to help create jobs and grow incomes,\u201d as well as more specific ones, including enrolling one million students each year in apprenticeship programs by the year of 2030.<\/p>\n
