{"id":140793,"date":"2020-01-09T23:51:41","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T23:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/britain-faces-heat-over-illegal-use-of-eu-migration-data\/"},"modified":"2020-01-09T23:51:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T23:51:41","slug":"britain-faces-heat-over-illegal-use-of-eu-migration-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/britain-faces-heat-over-illegal-use-of-eu-migration-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain faces heat over illegal use of EU migration data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European parliamentarians lashed out at the United Kingdom on Thursday over reports of abuse and illegal copying of a border control database compiled by the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Their message: We want our data back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the kindness of our hearts we have given them access to the Schengen Information System, and they are behaving like cowboys,\u201d Liberal MEP Sophie in t Veld said about British authorities handling of the migration information.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. is under fire over reports that the country mishandled and illegally copied data held in the SIS database, which contains tens of millions of records on EU citizens and people traveling in Europe, including fingerprints, facial images and DNA data.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. was granted access to the Schengen database in 2015, despite not being a member of the area that allows people to travel through it without passports and visas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Liberal MEPs are now calling for a \u201cfull investigation\u201d into the U.K.s misuse of the data<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As early as August 2015, the European Commission found misuse and mismanagement issues in its evaluations of the U.K.s use of the database \u2014 issues that the <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/justice\/141919\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EUObserver<\/a> first reported on in 2018 after obtaining a <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com\/euobs-media\/7512da93bb64c2e88d1e3431a9e92324.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confidential document<\/a> from the EU executive.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the scandal threatens to hamper security cooperation between London and Brussels as Britain heads toward Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a partner we can work with under these conditions,\u201d in t Veld said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/streaming?event=20200109-0900-COMMITTEE-LIBE&amp;start=2020-01-09T08:30:00Z&amp;end=2020-01-09T08:59:00Z&amp;language=en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debate<\/a> in the civil liberties committee of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In t Veld is one of 15 MEPs from the Liberal Renew Europe group who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/E-9-2019-002611_EN.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asked the Commission for an official response<\/a> on why it has yet to react to abuses and mismanagement of the EU-compiled database by U.K. authorities.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/GettyImages-1186268985-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In t Veld is one of 15 MEPs from the Liberal Renew Europe group who asked the Commission for an official response  | Andreas Solaro\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Commission has not formally responded to the questions. But a Commission official told MEPs Thursday that it \u201cis now considering to continue the evaluation process\u201d as the U.K. is set to continue to use data in the SIS system through the Brexit transition period, which lasts until at least the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2018, EUObserver cited a Commission document that said the British government had \u201ca significant number of full or partial copies of the SIS database,\u201d some of which were \u201cadministered by different private companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.s handling of the data was \u201ccontrary to the core objectives and legal framework of the system,\u201d according to the document, which the website <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/justice\/145530\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published last July<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marked \u201crestricted,\u201d the document further spells out how the British government also mismanaged implementation of the system, leading to potential failures to alert authorities when people who had been flagged to be arrested, reported missing or requiring checks entered the country.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the scandal, former European Security Commissioner Julian King <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/justice\/145530\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told EUObserver<\/a> that the U.K. was taking \u201cpractical steps\u201d to solve the issues identified by EU experts.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFor me its very clear: No more access to the Schengen Information System.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/britain-illegal-use-eu-migration-data\/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=RSS_Syndication\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More \u2013 Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p> [contf] [contfnew]         <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/snap.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/politico-logo.jpg\"\/> <\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">politico<\/a><\/h5>\n<p> [contfnewc] [contfnewc] <\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>European parliamentarians lashed out at the United Kingdom o..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":140794,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[50],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-140793","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
