Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) introduced the resolution (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Merkley%20Iran%20Resolution.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pdf<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people do not want another endless war in the Middle East\u2014yet what weve seen in recent days is a president willing to make significant military decisions bringing us closer to war without consulting Congress or recognizing that our Constitution gives war making power to Congress, not the president,\u201d Merkley said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts time for the Senate to send a clear message: The cost of sending our sons and daughters into danger is too great for any one president to make a singlehanded decision to send our nation into war.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/01\/09\/sen-rand-paul-1200x800.jpg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" \/><figcaption><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/01\/09\/sen-rand-paul-1200x800.jpg\" \/><\/figcaption><\/a> Sen. (Mark Wilson\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt is time for Congress to stop using previous AUMFs as an excuse to continue abdicating its constitutional responsibility on war,\u201d Paul added in a statement. \u201cWe can take a major step toward reasserting our voice by making it clear the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs do not authorize war with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Ed Markey, (D-Mass.), and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) co-sponsored the resolution, along with Democratic presidential contenders Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
