Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/477036-murkowski-decision-on-impeachment-witnesses-should-wait-until-after-start-of\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters<\/a> Monday after leaving McConnells office in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what we need to do is get to the first step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), another moderate Republican considered a possibility to side with Democrats on trial guidelines, also said Monday she approves of McConnells plan.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/01\/07\/susan-collins-3-1200x800.jpg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" alt=\"susan collins\" \/><figcaption><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/01\/07\/susan-collins-3-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"susan collins\" \/><\/figcaption><\/a> Sen. Scott Applewhite\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<p>Collins made a similar statement on Dec. 31, 2019, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/post\/collins-how-impeachment-trial-should-unfold\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maine Public Radio<\/a>: \u201cI am open to witnesses. I think its premature to decide who should be called until we see the evidence that is presented and get the answers to the questions that we senators can submit through the chief justice to both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that the model and the precedent established by the trial for President Clinton is one that our leaders should take a hard look at,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), another possible swing vote, told reporters on Monday he wants to hear from former National Security Adviser John Bolton but said hed leave it up to Senate leaders to decide on the trial process.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Bolton potentially testifying, Murkowski said, \u201cI think first we have to get to basically the first phase, which is having articles to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collins added <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeoffRBennett\/status\/1214313916114915328\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to reporters<\/a> about Bolton, \u201cThere are a number of witnesses that may well be appropriate for the Stage 3, of which he would certainly be one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the impeachment trial against President Bill Clinton, lawmakers heard from the prosecution and defense before submitting questions. They then voted on whether to hear from witnesses and try to get additional documents.
