{"id":139739,"date":"2019-12-05T11:40:41","date_gmt":"2019-12-05T11:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/judicial-watch-sues-state-department-for-documents-on-ambassador-yovanovitchs-untouchables-list\/"},"modified":"2019-12-05T11:40:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T11:40:41","slug":"judicial-watch-sues-state-department-for-documents-on-ambassador-yovanovitchs-untouchables-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/judicial-watch-sues-state-department-for-documents-on-ambassador-yovanovitchs-untouchables-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Judicial Watch Sues State Department for Documents on Ambassador Yovanovitchs Untouchables List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Judicial Watch announced on Dec. 4 it has filed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JW-v-State-Yovanovitch-Lutsenko-complaint-03563.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suit<\/a> in federal court seeking to force the Department of State to release documents the nonprofit government watchdog requested two months ago concerning the \u201cuntouchables\u201d list former U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch gave Ukraine Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department acknowledged receiving the Judicial Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/press-releases\/jw-investigates-if-ousted-ukraine-ambassador-ordered-state-dept-to-monitor-journalists-trump-allies-4\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FOIA<\/a> the same day it was filed, Sept. 24. But the government has since failed to produce \u201cthe requested records or demonstrated that the requested records are lawfully exempt from production,\u201d or informed Judicial Watch \u201cof the scope of any responsive records they intend to produce or withhold and the reasons for any withholdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judicial Watch sought the documents after investigative journalist John Solomon <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/campaign\/435906-us-embassy-pressed-ukraine-to-drop-probe-of-george-soros-group-during-2016\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> on March 26 that \u201cLutsenko told me he was stunned when the ambassador gave me a list of people whom we should not prosecute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More recently, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/05\/world\/europe\/ukraine-prosecutor-trump.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that \u201cshortly after taking up her post in 2016, the American ambassador to Ukraine, Marie L. Yovanovitch, went to meet the new prosecutor general, Mr. Lutsenko, in his office\u2014and complained that his deputies were stained by corruption, according to two Ukrainian officials familiar with the encounter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ambassador then pressed Mr. Lutsenko further, the officials said, asking him to stop investigating anti-corruption activists who were supported by the American Embassy and had criticized his work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anti-corruption activists Yovanovitch sought to protect against Lutsenkos investigation were associated with Ukraines <a href=\"https:\/\/antac.org.ua\/en\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anti-Corruption Action Center<\/a> (AntAC), which was funded by the U.S. government under President Barack Obama and by grants from organizations controlled by left-wing European financier George Soros, according to Judicial Watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe implied message to Ukraines prosecutors was clear: Dont target AntAC in the middle of an American presidential election in which Soros was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/01\/hillary-clinton-george-soros-218494\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backing Hillary Clinton<\/a> to succeed another Soros favorite, Barack Obama, Ukrainian officials said,\u201d Solomon reported.<\/p>\n<p>Solomon also reported that then-U.S. Embassy Charg\u00e9 d Affaires George Kent had also sought to derail Lutsenkos investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Yovanovitch, who was dismissed from her diplomatic post in May 2017 by President Donald Trump, and Kent testified earlier this year before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in both closed-door and public hearings.
