House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said Monday that the White Houses announcement about not participating in Wednesdays impeachment hearing is a telltale sign.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American people deserve transparency,\u201d Nadler said in a statement to media outlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the President thinks the call was perfect and there is nothing to hide then he would turn over the thousands of pages of documents requested by Congress, allow witnesses to testify instead of blocking testimony with baseless privilege claims, and provide any exculpatory information that refutes the overwhelming evidence,\u201d Nadler added.<\/p>\n

He was referring to a July 25 phone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky where Trump asked his counterpart to \u201clook into\u201d former Vice President Joe Biden and son Hunter Bidens dealings in the country. Trump released a transcript of the call after the inquiry was announced and has said it was \u201ca perfect call.\u201d Zelensky also told reporters in late September that they<\/a> \u201chad [a] good phone call,\u201d and \u201cit was normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

White House counsel Pat Cipollone sent a letter to the longtime Democratic congressman on Sunday informing him that the White House wont partake in the hearing.<\/p>\n

Nadler scheduled the hearing for Wednesday, Dec. 4, which will feature Constitutional law scholars.<\/p>\n

But Cipollone said the inquiry is \u201cbaseless,\u201d \u201chighly partisan,\u201d and \u201cviolates all past historical precedent\u201d as well as due process rights enshrined in the Constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs for the hearing scheduled for Dec. 4, we cannot fairly be expected to participate in a hearing while the witnesses are yet to be named and while it remains unclear whether the Judiciary Committee will afford the president a fair process through additional hearings,\u201d Cipollone told the committee. \u201cMore importantly, an invitation to an academic discussion with law professors does not begin to provide the president with any semblance of a fair process. Accordingly, under the current circumstances, we do not intend to participate in your Wednesday hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n
