{"id":139618,"date":"2019-12-04T03:10:21","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T03:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/report-linking-labour-leak-to-russia-reveals-weakness-of-uk-electoral-system\/"},"modified":"2019-12-04T03:10:21","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T03:10:21","slug":"report-linking-labour-leak-to-russia-reveals-weakness-of-uk-electoral-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/report-linking-labour-leak-to-russia-reveals-weakness-of-uk-electoral-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Report linking Labour leak to Russia reveals weakness of UK electoral system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 Did Russia try to meddle in the upcoming election in the United Kingdom?<\/p>\n<p>Thats the suggestion after Graphika, a social media analytics firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/graphika.com\/uploads\/Graphika%20Report%20-%20UK%20Trade%20Leaks%20-%2012.19.pdf?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=17aee521a0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_12_03_06_58&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-17aee521a0-189970353&amp;utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=06395d187f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_12_03_01_56&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-06395d187f-189794713\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published a report<\/a> Monday that linked a recent leak of trade talks between London and Washington to tactics used by an established Russian disinformation operation.<\/p>\n<p>The leak \u2014 that showed notes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/labour-dossier-indicates-nhs-up-for-sale-in-us-trade-deal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discussions between U.S. and British officials<\/a> about a potential free-trade agreement after the U.K. leaves the European Union \u2014 bears a close resemblance to \u201cSecondary Infektion,\u201d a Kremlin-backed online operation, according to security expert Ben Nimmo, who wrote the analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe similarities are too close for it to be a coincidence,\u201d Nimmo said. \u201cThe big question is how did internal U.K. government documents end up on social media accounts as part of a possible disinformation campaign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leak fueled division across the U.K. about whether the current ruling Conservatives would seek to privatize the countrys much-loved NHS \u2014 a key attack line of the opposition Labour party, which Boris Johnsons government has vehemently denied. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, speaking on ITVs This Morning program, did not reveal where his party had obtained the documents but claimed no U.K. government minister had questioned the accuracy of the contents.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever their origin, the documents again highlight an issue that has concerned many security officials for years, namely that the U.K. election remains susceptible to disinformation attempts \u2014 either by foreign actors or domestic groups \u2014 and it is very difficult to stop them.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The goal of such disinformation campaigns, according to experts, is not to back one side or the other.
