Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-N.J.) again broke from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other top House Democrats in a new interview, saying he still doesnt support his partys move to impeach President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Speaking to USA Today in an interview<\/a> published over the weekend, Van Drew explained that \u201c[his] job isnt really to like or dislike him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy job is to exact as much goodwill and help for my district and for this nation and for this world that I possibly can while hes president,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Van Drew suggested he wasnt exactly pleased with Trumps dealings with Ukraine, which are the subject of the impeachment inquiry, but he said hes seen no impeachable offenses after several months of closed-door and public hearings.<\/p>\n

The 66-year-old pointed out that no president in history has been successfully removed by the Senate. To have a \u201csmall, elite group\u201d of lawmakers try and remove a president just months before an election is indefensible and un-American, he told the paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo some folks, thats reminiscent of what was done to kings and queens many years ago,\u201d Van Drew said. \u201cEverything our country doesnt stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Drew and longtime Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), who chairs the House Committee on Agriculture, were the only two Democrats to oppose a procedural House vote\u2014the only one that has been held so far\u2014on moving the impeachment inquiry into the public sphere. No Republicans have supported it, and USA Today noted that on-the-fence members of the GOP like Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) have not backed impeaching Trump.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a number of Republican senators, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have said its highly unlikely Trump gets removed during the Senate trial as the GOP controls the upper Congressional body. Even some Democratic senators like Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) have expressed doubt about whether there will be 67 votes\u2014the required number to impeach a president.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what Ive heard publicly and privately, I dont think there will be the votes to remove him if this does come to an impeachment trial in the Senate,\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
