Campaign, GOP Accuse Google of Voter Suppression With New Ad Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the campaign of President Donald Trump have rebuked Googles new political advertising rules and accused the company of voter suppression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle has made an extraordinarily poor decision which will lead to less-informed voters, lower voter engagement, and voter suppression,\u201d according to a Nov. 26 joint statement by the campaign, the RNC, and the partys senatorial and congressional committees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle should immediately reverse its decision in order to ensure they do not suppress voter turnout during both the Democrat primaries and the 2020 general election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic National Committee, while supporting more regulation, also complained about the new rules, inviting tech companies to \u201can open and transparent conversation about how we effectively regulate political advertising online,\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/dnc-dscc-dccc-joint-statement-on-googles-recent-changes-to-its-political-ad-policy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nov. 22 statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Googles new rules put additional restrictions in two areas: ad targeting and \u201cmisleading content.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Misleading<\/h2>\n<p>While the company had already prohibited making false claims in ads displayed to its users, it recently <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/adspolicy\/answer\/6020955?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=1626336\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added an additional rule<\/a> against \u201cmaking claims that are demonstrably false and could significantly undermine participation or trust in an electoral or democratic process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As examples, it listed \u201cinformation about public voting procedures, political candidate eligibility based on age or birthplace, election results, or census participation that contradicts official government records; incorrect claims that a public figure has died, or been involved in an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also added a prohibition on \u201cmanipulating media to deceive, defraud, or mislead others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It gave an example of \u201cdeceptively doctoring media related to politics, social issues, or matters of public concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, we recognize that robust political dialogue is an important part of democracy, and no one can sensibly adjudicate every political claim, counterclaim, and insinuation,\u201d the company stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/ads\/update-our-political-ads-policy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nov. 20 blog post<\/a> announcing the rule changes. \u201cSo we expect that the number of political ads on which we take action will be very limited\u2014but we will continue to do so for clear violations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans voiced concern about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/google-engineer-leaks-nearly-1000-internal-documents-alleging-bias-censorship_3042234.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the growing and documented cases of anti-conservative bias in Silicon Valley, we are highly skeptical that such a ban would be applied equally to conservative and liberal organizations,\u201d the joint statement said.<\/p>\n<h2>Targeting<\/h2>\n<p>Google also announced it will no longer allow targeting of election ads to more specific user groups, such as targeting \u201cbased on public voter records and general political affiliations (left-leaning, right-leaning, and independent).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo further promote increased visibility of election ads,\u201d the company stated, starting Jan. 6 it will be \u201climiting election ads audience targeting to the following general categories: age, gender, and general location (postal code level).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans criticized the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy limiting<a
