{"id":138911,"date":"2019-11-26T16:30:16","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T16:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/uber-loses-london-operating-license\/"},"modified":"2019-11-26T16:30:16","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T16:30:16","slug":"uber-loses-london-operating-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/uber-loses-london-operating-license\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber loses London operating license"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Uber just got canceled in London.<\/p>\n<p>In a serious blow to the ride-hailing firm, U.K. regulator Transport for London yanked Ubers operating license in the city on Monday over what Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SadiqKhan\/status\/1198908741548171264?s=20\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sadiq Khan<\/a> said was a \u201cpattern of failure that has directly put passenger safety at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know this decision may be unpopular with Uber users but their safety is the paramount concern,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cAt this stage, TfL [Transport for London] cant be confident that Uber has the robust processes in place to prevent another serious safety breach in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Uber will continue to operate in London pending an appeal process, the move is nonetheless a substantial setback for a company that has spent the past year trying to reboot its presence in Europe following a number of clashes with regulators and national courts.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview earlier this month, a senior Uber executive told POLITICO the firm was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uber-plots-reconquest-of-europe-via-smaller-countries-estonia-croatia\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eyeing smaller countries<\/a> in Central and Eastern Europe as growth markets thanks to liberalization of taxi sectors. Uber has also launched a fresh push into Germany, where its service had been banned in several cities.<\/p>\n<p>Yet London remains a key market where Uber has some 45,000 drivers and 3.5 million users.<\/p>\n<p>The Transport for London decision signals that Uber remains vulnerable to regulatory setbacks \u2014 even in places where it has been long established and has built up a major base of users.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, Khan underscored some 14,000 \u201cfraudulent trips\u201d with unlicensed drivers taking over existing accounts as reasons for not renewing the license \u2014 an argument fiercely contested by Uber.<\/p>\n<p>Ubers regional manager Jamie Heywood called the decision \u201cextraordinary and wrong,\u201d while confirming that the company would appeal.<\/p>\n<h3>Uber for safety<\/h3>\n<p>Ubers collision with Transport for London has been a long time coming.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uber-london-licence-transport-for-london-operate-win\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulator revoked Ubers license<\/a> because it had failed to meet a so-called \u201cfit and proper\u201d test to hold a transportation license.
