{"id":138819,"date":"2019-11-25T16:10:22","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T16:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/german-minister-defends-criticism-of-untrustworthy-us-as-backlash-grows\/"},"modified":"2019-11-25T16:10:22","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T16:10:22","slug":"german-minister-defends-criticism-of-untrustworthy-us-as-backlash-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/german-minister-defends-criticism-of-untrustworthy-us-as-backlash-grows\/","title":{"rendered":"German minister defends criticism of untrustworthy US as backlash grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2013 German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier on Monday defended describing the United States as \u201cunreliable and untrustworthy\u201d in a debate over whether Chinese companies should be banned from providing equipment for Germanys 5G telecoms network.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. ambassador to Berlin, Richard Grenell, strongly condemned the remarks, branding them \u201can insult to the thousands of American troops who help ensure Germanys security and the millions of Americans committed to a strong Western alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Altmaier, Angela Merkels former chief of staff and a close ally of the chancellor, made the comments on live television Sunday during a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1jNiq-6FGEE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">talk show<\/a> about whether Germany should allow Chinas Huawei to provide equipment for the rollout of the 5G network. Merkel has advocated letting the Chinese in, despite deep reservations both within her own party and her governing coalition.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, the minister made reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/nsa-spying-scandal-committee-presents-controversial-final-report\/a-39453668\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spying in Germany by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA)<\/a>, which included eavesdropping on Merkels mobile phone calls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in an open world,\u201d Altmaier said to a journalist on the show who challenged the governments position. \u201cI recall during the NSA affair, when I was chief of staff, how you continuously investigated how unreliable and untrustworthy the U.S. government was, and we didnt impose a boycott then either.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> \u201cIn no way did I put countries that do not respect the rule of law on the same level as democracies that respect the rule of law such as the United States \u2014 quite the opposite\u201d<em> \u2014 German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Asked about the comments by POLITICO on the sidelines of a technology conference in Berlin, Altmaier said he was \u201cvery upset\u201d by what he termed mischaracterizations of his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn no way did I put countries that do not respect the rule of law on the same level as democracies that respect the rule of law such as the United States \u2014 quite the opposite,\u201d he said, adding that he had instead \u201cdefended the United States against accusations of mass surveillance of the internet, which were raised by [German] opposition politicians\u201d after the revelations in 2013 that the NSA had bugged Merkels mobile phone.<\/p>\n<p>But Altmaier added that it is \u201cimportant to note\u201d that regulation forcing companies to hand over data to state authorities under certain conditions \u201cexist in many countries when it comes to law enforcement,\u201d in an apparent reference to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/german-privacy-watchdog-says-amazon-cloud-vulnerable-to-us-snooping\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. CLOUD Act<\/a>, which was signed into law last year by President Donald Trump and allows American authorities to compel U.S.-based tech companies to provide data, regardless of whether it is stored in the U.S. or abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Altmaiers negative characterization of Germanys longtime ally and protector illustrates the depth of the rift between the U.S. and Germany, which has worsened in recent months amid trade disputes and Washingtons persistent criticism of Berlins failure to meet NATO defense spending goals.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/GettyImages-1186275793-714x483.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell | Sean Gallup\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The ministers comments, which came as Beijings repressive policies towards its own population have come into full view in recent days in both Hong Kong and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2019\/11\/24\/us\/ap-as-the-china-cables.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xinjiang<\/a>, surprised many viewers and even some of his fellow talk-show guests, who quickly pointed out that the U.S. is a democracy governed by the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>Grenell, the U.S. ambassador, weighed in with his response the following day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States and Germany, nations that do share common values, need to work together to call out threats that undermine our democracy and work continuously to advance the cause of freedom,\u201d Grenell<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/german-minister-peter-altmaier-defends-criticism-of-untrustworthy-us-as-backlash-grows\/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=RSS_Syndication\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More \u2013 Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2013 German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier on Monday de..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":138820,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[50],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-138819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
