{"id":13880,"date":"2017-11-03T17:44:50","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T17:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/uk-labour-party-suspends-mp-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations\/"},"modified":"2017-11-03T17:44:50","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T17:44:50","slug":"uk-labour-party-suspends-mp-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/uk-labour-party-suspends-mp-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Labour Party suspends MP over sexual misconduct allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins was suspended following allegations that he sexually harassed a Labour activist and sent her inappropriate text messages, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/11\/02\/labour\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph<\/a> reported late Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Hopkins, 76, an MP for Luton North since 1997, will lose his party membership and will no longer be sent party voting instructions \u2014 known in British parliamentary language as \u201closing the whip\u201d \u2014 pending investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Hopkins\u2019 accuser, Ava Etemadzadeh, told the Telegraph that he rubbed himself against her at a Labour event in 2014, and sent her inappropriate text messages the following year. Etemadzadeh also accused the Labour leadership of not acting when she complained about Hopkins\u2019 behavior in 2015 and said the party promoted Hopkins to the shadow cabinet while aware of the allegations against him.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI know the Leader\u2019s office was informed and they didn\u2019t act on it, which is absolutely disgraceful. [Hopkins] was then promoted to the shadow cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party said in a statement: \u201cThe Labour party takes all such complaints extremely seriously and has robust procedures in place to deal with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Labour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/labour-mp-jared-omara-suspended-over-misogynist-comments\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">suspended Jared O\u2019Mara<\/a>, an MP from Sheffield Hallam, last week after he was accused of verbally abusing a woman at a nightclub months before his election in June this year.
