European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen has agreed to change some job titles in her team, social democrats in the European Parliament said Wednesday, in a move that may ease the confirmation of her remaining nominees.<\/p>\n
The controversial vice presidency for \u201cprotecting our European Way of Life,\u201d to be held by Margaritis Schinas of Greece, will be renamed to become \u201cpromoting our European way of life,\u201d the Socialists & Democrats (S&D) group said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The future commissioner for jobs, Nicolas Schmit of Luxembourg, will have \u201csocial rights\u201d added to his title while \u201cfisheries\u201d will be added to the title of Virginijus Sinkevi\u00e7ius, the commissioner-designate for Environment and Oceans.<\/p>\n
Paolo Gentiloni, the Italian center-left commissioner-designate, will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of U.N. sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n
The S&D group hailed the moves as significant concessions by von der Leyen.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing several days of negotiation with the president-elect of the European Commission, this morning S&D President Iratxe Garc\u00eda received confirmation from Ursula von der Leyen that she agrees to a series of important demands made by the Socialists and Democrats,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n
