The rest, or 13,909, voted against the name change.<\/p>\n<p>The City Council voted 8-4 in January to rename The Paseo, triggering a movement called Save The Paseo.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers collected nearly 3,000 signatures to put the name issue on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>The question posed to voters was: \u201cShall the City of Kansas City change the name of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., which is approximately 9.98 miles in length from the center line of Lexington Avenue south and east to a point south of the center line of East 85th Street, back to The Paseo Boulevard?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/11\/06\/AP19308839882975-1200x800.jpg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" \/><figcaption><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/11\/06\/AP19308839882975-1200x800.jpg\" \/><\/figcaption><\/a> People wearing \u201cSave The Paseo\u201d shirts stand among attendees at a rally to keep a street named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Paseo Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 3, 2019. (Charlie Riedel\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<p>Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who introduced the proposal to change the name to \u201cMartin Luther King Jr. Blvd.,\u201d weighed in on the vote early Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what weve learned from this process, and frankly even almost as soon as I introduced it, you saw that process matters,\u201d he said during an appearance <a href=\"https:\/\/fox4kc.com\/2019\/11\/06\/mayor-quinton-lucas-weighs-in-on-voters-decision-to-change-mlk-jr-blvd-back-to-the-paseo\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on WDAF-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople want to make sure that we engage with enough different community stakeholders. And I think its fair to say that that did not happen, and thats why were kind of in the position we are now. In terms of steps forward, I think its important for us to recognize that this wasnt so much a repudiation of the Dr. King name, or any of the ministers involved, but its saying, its important to work together and get this thing right.&#039;\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nI know Kansas City to be a welcoming and diverse community and todays vote does not change that.
