{"id":135899,"date":"2019-10-27T09:40:15","date_gmt":"2019-10-27T09:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/german-mps-demand-compensation-for-uk-customs-cash-in\/"},"modified":"2019-10-27T09:40:15","modified_gmt":"2019-10-27T09:40:15","slug":"german-mps-demand-compensation-for-uk-customs-cash-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/german-mps-demand-compensation-for-uk-customs-cash-in\/","title":{"rendered":"German MPs demand compensation for UK customs cash-in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2014 Leading German MPs are demanding that the U.K. compensate the EU for customs revenues that London will collect for goods entering the single market under Boris Johnsons Brexit deal, and say the German government is backing their request.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/the-brexit-deal-explained-2\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revised Brexit deal<\/a> backed by British MPs late Tuesday, Northern Ireland would formally remain in the U.K.s customs territory while also following EU customs rules. British customs authorities would check goods going into Northern Ireland from the U.K. mainland and could collect customs duties if those goods are at \u201crisk\u201d of subsequently entering the EU market.<\/p>\n<p>Even though those duties are charged on goods entering the EU market, Brussels agreed the revenues would remain in the British budget: \u201cCustoms duties levied by the United Kingdom \u2026 are not remitted to the Union,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/sites\/beta-political\/files\/revised_withdrawal_agreement_including_protocol_on_ireland_and_nothern_ireland.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protocol<\/a> on Ireland and Northern Ireland says.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin, however, believes this is not the final word on the issue, according to Gunther Krichbaum, a senior lawmaker from Angela Merkels Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and chair of the Bundestags committee for European affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, we have to see that we can retroactively find an appropriate compensation,\u201d he said in an interview, adding: \u201cThis view is also shared by the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\u201cWe have to see that we can retroactively find an appropriate compensation\u201d \u2014 <em>senior CDU lawmaker Gunter Krichbaum<\/em>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Michael Link, the liberal FDP partys EU spokesperson, said it would be \u201cquite strange\u201d if the U.K. was allowed to keep customs duties it levied on goods crossing the Irish Sea and entering the EU market.<\/p>\n<p>The German government on Monday briefed selected lawmakers on the Brexit deal and said that it would push for a compensation, according to another person, who was present at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the German ministry of foreign affairs said Berlin \u201cof course stands by the decision\u201d of EU leaders to back the Brexit deal agreed with the U.K. prime minister, but did not comment on whether Germany would seek to obtain retroactive compensation.<\/p>\n<p>However, a European Commission official said the arrangement is \u201ca logical consequence of Northern Ireland remaining in the UKs customs territory,\u201d and that Brussels has no plans to arrange compensation.<\/p>\n<p>The de<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-mps-demand-compensation-uk-customs-revenue-brexit\/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=RSS_Syndication\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More \u2013 Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2014 Leading German MPs are demanding that the U.K. compensate the EU for customs revenues that ..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":135900,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-135899","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
