{"id":135665,"date":"2019-10-24T22:50:09","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T22:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/house-chair-asks-sergeant-at-arms-to-take-action-after-republicans-enter-secure-hearing\/"},"modified":"2019-10-24T22:50:09","modified_gmt":"2019-10-24T22:50:09","slug":"house-chair-asks-sergeant-at-arms-to-take-action-after-republicans-enter-secure-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/house-chair-asks-sergeant-at-arms-to-take-action-after-republicans-enter-secure-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"House Chair Asks Sergeant-at-Arms to Take Action After Republicans Enter Secure Hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) asked the top congressional law enforcement official to \u201ctake action\u201d after Republican lawmakers brought in electronic devices to a secure facility as a witness was under deposition during the impeachment inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson alleged that Republicans decision to bring phones into the sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF) violated intelligence community protocols to protect classified information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unprecedented breach of security raises serious concerns for committee chairman, including me, responsible for maintaining SCIFs,\u201d Thompson said in a letter<a href=\"https:\/\/homeland.house.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/IrvingSCIF.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> (pdf)<\/a> to Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He asked Irving to take action on the matter, but he did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/10\/24\/Matt-Gaetz.jpg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" \/><figcaption><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/10\/24\/Matt-Gaetz-600x400.jpg\" \/><\/figcaption><\/a> Rep. More broadly, I urge you to take House-wide action to remind all members about the dangers of such reckless action and the potential national security risks of such behavior,\u201d Thompson said.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday morning, around 30 Republican lawmakers entered the SCIF to witness depositions. Only the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, and Oversight and Reform committees are tasked with heading the impeachment inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), a member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, said he collected lawmakers phones and brought them outside the room in accordance with the rules.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/10\/23\/Rep.-Matt-Gaetz-Holds-Press-Conference-1200x800.jpg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" alt=\"Rep. (Alex Wroblewski\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou certainly want a secure environment, but at the same time I think everybody wants to hear exactly whats going on,\u201d Meadows told reporters, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/467179-house-chairman-asks-sergeant-at-arms-to-take-action-after-republicans-bring\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers said that staff members sent out tweets as they were in the SCIF.<\/p>\n<p>A number of other Democratic lawmakers blasted the move and namely Rep.
