{"id":134777,"date":"2019-10-17T07:10:09","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T07:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/queens-speech-brexit-top-priority-for-uk-government\/"},"modified":"2019-10-17T07:10:09","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T07:10:09","slug":"queens-speech-brexit-top-priority-for-uk-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/queens-speech-brexit-top-priority-for-uk-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Queens speech: Brexit top priority for UK government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K. government is still determined to see Brexit through by October 31 \u2014 and you can take that from the queen.<\/p>\n<p>The monarch opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/queens-speech-2019\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her speech Monday<\/a>, which sets out the governments legislative plans, by making it clear that Boris Johnsons top priority is \u201cto secure the United Kingdoms departure from the European Union on 31 October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from the throne in the House of Lords, the queen said her government intends to develop a new partnership with the EU \u201cbased on free trade and friendly cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony marks the beginning of a new parliamentary session and lays out the governments new legislative agenda, with 26 bills announced on domestic policy areas including crime, immigration, health, and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>However, since Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not command a majority in the House of Commons these plans are unlikely to become law quickly and instead are an indication of what the Tories would promise if they secure a general election.<\/p>\n<p>The speech also set out the governments intended Brexit outcome, which is subject to agreement with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>In its briefing note accompanying the speech, the government said it intends to implement \u201ca new protocol on Ireland\/Northern Ireland, which does not include the backstop arrangements,\u201d a reference to the mechanism designed to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland that has been widely rejected by MPs.
