{"id":133959,"date":"2019-10-09T10:50:36","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T10:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/former-national-security-officials-pen-open-letter-defending-whistleblower-protection\/"},"modified":"2019-10-09T10:50:36","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T10:50:36","slug":"former-national-security-officials-pen-open-letter-defending-whistleblower-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/former-national-security-officials-pen-open-letter-defending-whistleblower-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"Former National Security Officials Pen Open Letter Defending Whistleblower Protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of about 90 former national security officials have written an open letter calling for the government and media to protect the identity of the whistleblower at the center of an impeachment inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>The public letter (<a href=\"https:\/\/s.wsj.net\/public\/resources\/documents\/Whistleblower%20Letter.pdf?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pdf<\/a>), which was first published in The Wall Street Journal on Oct. 6, argues that the person who filed the complaint against President Donald Trump, related to his July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, had followed proper procedure when making the complaint and should be entitled to the protections afforded under federal whistleblowing laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA responsible whistleblower makes all Americans safer by ensuring that serious wrongdoing can be investigated and addressed, thus advancing the cause of national security to which we have devoted our careers,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cWhats more, being a responsible whistleblower means that, by law, one is protected from certain egregious forms of retaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever ones view of the matters discussed in the whistleblowers complaint, all Americans should be united in demanding that all branches of our government and all outlets of our media protect this whistleblower and his or her identity. Simply put, he or she has done what our law demands; now, he or she deserves our protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was jointly signed by officials who served under Democratic and Republican presidents, including many Obama administration officials such as former CIA Director John Brennan and James Clapper, former director of national intelligence, who have been under scrutiny for their alleged roles in the origins of the counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was made public on the same day reports that a second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-whistleblower\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whistleblower<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/intelligence-community-watchdog-interviews-second-whistleblower_3107542.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been interviewed by Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson<\/a>. The second whistleblower is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/intelligence-community-watchdog-interviews-second-whistleblower_3107542.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said to have firsthand knowledge<\/a> of some of the events described by the first whistleblower and is also a member of the intelligence community.<\/p>\n<p>The first whistleblowers attorney, Mark Zaid, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarkSZaidEsq\/status\/1180839570839101443?s=20\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed the news<\/a> on Oct. 6, saying that his team was also representing the second whistleblower. Zaid didnt clarify whether the second whistleblower has filed a formal complaint, revealing only that he or she has spoken with Atkinson.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had previously said he wanted to meet his accuser, after the complaint prompted the House to launch an impeachment inquiry into the president. He has previously criticized the whistleblower for mischaracterizing the July 25 call with Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/trump-says-person-who-gave-whistleblower-information-was-dishonest-needs-to-be-identified_3104046.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saying that the person either provided false information<\/a> or the person who provided the whistleblower with information was \u201cdishonest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote a vicious conversation. In other words, he either got it totally wrong, made it up, or the person giving the information to the whistleblower was dishonest,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cThis country has to find out who that person was because that person is a spy in my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Congress members from both sides of the aisle have expressed their support to uphold the law to protect the identity of the whistleblower, including Sen.
