{"id":133863,"date":"2019-10-08T18:40:27","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T18:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/3-win-nobel-prize-in-physics-for-work-to-understand-cosmos\/"},"modified":"2019-10-08T18:40:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T18:40:27","slug":"3-win-nobel-prize-in-physics-for-work-to-understand-cosmos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/3-win-nobel-prize-in-physics-for-work-to-understand-cosmos\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Win Nobel Prize in Physics for Work to Understand Cosmos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STOCKHOLM\u2014A Canadian-American cosmologist and two Swiss scientists won this years Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for their work in understanding how the universe has evolved from the Big Bang and the blockbuster discovery of the first known planet outside our solar system.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian-born James Peebles, 84, of Princeton University, was credited for \u201ctheoretical discoveries in physical cosmology\u201d and Switzerlands Michel Mayor, 77, and Didier Queloz, 53, each from the University of Geneva, were honored for discovering \u201can exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star,\u201d said Prof. Goran Hansson, secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Peebles, hailed as one of the most influential cosmologists of his time, will collect one half of the 9-million kronor ($918,000) cash award, and the Swiss men will share the other half.<\/p>\n<p>The Nobel committee said Peebles theoretical framework about the cosmos\u2014and its billions of galaxies and galaxy clusters\u2014amounted to \u201cthe foundation of our modern understanding of the universes history, from the Big Bang to the present day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/10\/08\/Nobel-Prize-for-Physics-1200x800.jpeg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><figcaption><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/10\/08\/Nobel-Prize-for-Physics-600x400.jpeg\" alt=\"Nobel Prize for Physics\"\/><\/figcaption><\/a> A screen displays the portraits of the laureates of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics, with left to right, James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, during a news conference at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, on Oct. 8, 2019. (Claudio Bresciani \/ TT via AP)<\/figure>\n<p>His work set the stage for a \u201ctransformation\u201d of cosmology over the last half-century, using theoretical tools and calculations that helped interpret traces from the infancy of the universe, the committee said. (Laurent Gillieron, Keystone via AP)<\/figure>\n<p>The cash prize comes with a gold medal and a diploma that are received at an elegant ceremony in Stockholm on Dec. 10, the anniversary of the death of prize founder Alfred Nobel in 1896, together with five other Nobel winners. The sixth one, the peace prize, is handed out in Oslo, Norway on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>This was the 113th Nobel Prize in Physics awarded since 1901, of which 47 awards have been given to a single laureate.
