{"id":13372,"date":"2017-11-01T21:11:08","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T21:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/bbc-wrong-to-not-challenge-climate-sceptic-lord-lawson\/"},"modified":"2017-11-01T21:11:08","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T21:11:08","slug":"bbc-wrong-to-not-challenge-climate-sceptic-lord-lawson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/bbc-wrong-to-not-challenge-climate-sceptic-lord-lawson\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC wrong to not challenge climate sceptic Lord Lawson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The BBC should have challenged the views of climate sceptic Lord Lawson in an interview in August, the complaints unit for the corporation has ruled.<\/p>\n<p>The ex-chancellor claimed in an interview with the Today programme that &quot;official figures&quot; showed average world temperatures had &quot;slightly declined&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>This view, shown to be false by the Met Office, was not challenged on air. <\/p>\n<p>The BBC admitted it had breached its &quot;guidelines on accuracy and impartiality&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative peer Lord Lawson&#039;s appearance on Radio 4&#039;s flagship Today programme sparked a number of complaints from listeners. <\/p>\n<p>He had been invited on to discuss the latest film on climate change by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p05bzxpt\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">former US Vice President Al Gore<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>During the interview, Lord Lawson said &quot;official figures&quot; showed that &quot;during this past 10 years, if anything\u2026 average world temperature has slightly declined&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed the UN&#039;s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had confirmed there had not been in an increase in extreme weather events for the last 10 years. <\/p>\n<p>Dr Peter Stott, of the Met Office, came on the programme the following day to confirm that Lord Lawson&#039;s statistics, which he did not cite at the time, were incorrect. <\/p>\n<p>Dr Stott also said the IPCC has clearly indicated an increase in extreme weather events across the globe were linked to human use of fossil fuels. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Global Warming Policy Foundation, a campaign group chaired by Lord Lawson, later confirmed his statistics were &quot;erroneous&quot;. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-40899188\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Anger over &#039;untrue&#039; climate claims<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-24021772\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">What is climate change?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The BBC&#039;s media editor Amol Rajan said the Today programme had a remit to offer dissenting opinions, aimed at challenging lazy thinking and consensus views. <\/p>\n<p>But he said the BBC&#039;s complaints department ruled that a lack of scrutiny of Lord Lawson&#039;s claims meant the interview fell short of editorial standards. <\/p>\n<p>It ruled that the peer&#039;s statements &quot;were, at the least, contestable and should have been challenged&quot;.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>Media playback is unsupported on your device<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalscience.com\/global-warming-scientific-consensus-intermediate.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">A paper by Skeptical Science<\/a> claims that 97% of scientists across the globe believe climate change is caused by humans.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 the BBC Trust stated the corporation has &quot;a duty to reflect the weight of scientific agreement but it should also reflect the existence of critical views appropriately&quot;. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Let&#039;s block ads!<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/acceptable.html\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">(Why?)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-41744344\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Original Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BBC should have challenged the views of climate sceptic ..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[49],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-13372","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-science"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
