{"id":131171,"date":"2019-09-11T05:40:06","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T05:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/eus-trade-pick-is-no-fan-of-brexit\/"},"modified":"2019-09-11T05:40:06","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T05:40:06","slug":"eus-trade-pick-is-no-fan-of-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/eus-trade-pick-is-no-fan-of-brexit\/","title":{"rendered":"EUs trade pick is no fan of Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Irishman Phil Hogan being nominated as next trade commissioner, the stage has been set for yet another potential Brexit drama.<\/p>\n<p>Known for his tough negotiating tactics and not mincing his words, Hogan has repeatedly warned of the negative consequences of a no-deal Brexit and lashed out against the British governments handling of the negotiations, Prime Minister Boris Johnson in particular.<\/p>\n<p>In his previous position as agriculture commissioner in Jean-Claude Junckers Cabinet, Hogan even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/european-commission-sends-phil-hogan-into-brexit-battle\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had Junckers blessing<\/a> to travel across the U.K. before the EU referendum to campaign against Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The stakes are higher now that Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/von-der-leyen-unveils-full-commission-list\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed the 1.95-meter tall Irishman as the blocs next trade chief<\/a> \u2014 a position that will see him front and center of negotiations on a post-Brexit trade deal with the U.K. (Announcing her nomination today, von der Leyen dubbed him a \u201chard and fair negotiator,\u201d a reputation he has earned in trade talks with Japan and the Mercosur countries.)<\/p>\n<p>During a speech at the end of August, Hogan gave a taste of whats to come. Slamming Johnson as an \u201cunelected prime minister,\u201d he also said Brussels will \u201cnot buckle\u201d under any pressure the U.K. government is trying to assert on its red lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a definite advantage to have an Irish person in charge of this crucial brief over the next five years.\u201d <em>\u2014 Leo Varadkar<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Leaving the EU without a deal will create a \u201cfoul atmosphere\u201d and have \u201cserious consequences\u201d on the prospects of a trade deal between London and Brussels, Hogan said bluntly.<\/p>\n<p>European commissioners are meant to stay out of national affairs and focus on representing the EUs interests as a whole. But Hogan has repeatedly flouted or ignored this rule.<\/p>\n<p>Irelands particularly delicate position when it comes to Brexit will be served well by his continued interest and interference in national affairs.
