{"id":130859,"date":"2019-09-08T16:50:25","date_gmt":"2019-09-08T16:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/flying-cars-from-sci-fi-to-reality\/"},"modified":"2019-09-08T16:50:25","modified_gmt":"2019-09-08T16:50:25","slug":"flying-cars-from-sci-fi-to-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/flying-cars-from-sci-fi-to-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Flying cars, from sci-fi to reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FARNBOROUGH, England \u2014 Drones are here and flying cars are moving from sci-fi to reality \u2014 now regulators and potential customers are scrambling to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>Aerospace giants like Airbus and Boeing, tech companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2019\/jan\/11\/uber-partner-bell-reveals-design-for-flying-taxi-nexus-ces-vegas\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uber<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/2019\/06\/13\/big-macs-from-above-uber-plans-to-deliver-mcdonalds-via-drone\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McDonalds<\/a> are betting big on drone deliveries and air taxis. They promise to shorten delivery times, ease congestion and decarbonize transport. But that technological vision is running into two problems \u2014 public skepticism and a missing regulatory framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of people come and say they want to launch in central London, thats great but planning issues, privacy, power and public acceptance are more intensely felt there,\u201d Tim Johnson, policy director at the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority, said at the Global Urban Air Summit at Farnborough on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is that the nascent technologies span the range from what exists now \u2014 drones, for example \u2014 to those that are still on drawing boards, like <a href=\"https:\/\/bartini.aero\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">various<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samadaerospace.com\/starling-jet\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">versions<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocopter.com\/en\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flying<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vertical-aerospace.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cars<\/a>. Regulators have to work out rules on everything from what is covered \u2014 the EU had a big debate on how heavy a drone has to be before tougher rules apply \u2014 to how such decisions affect shared airspace, noise levels, pollution and safety.<\/p>\n<p>While Brussels is trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easa.europa.eu\/newsroom-and-events\/press-releases\/easa-paves-way-enable-safe-air-travel-urban-air-mobility-and-air\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">establish EU-wide rules<\/a>, national regulators are also drawing up regulations, and often choosing divergent approaches.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> \u201cIf we think if we go in anything less than incremental steps, then were probably mistaken\u201d <em>\u2014 Jon Round, Civil Aviation Authority official<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPicking our markets have been almost exclusively driven by politics, not economics,\u201d said Duncan Walker, co-founder and managing director of Skyports, a company that builds platforms and buildings from which aircraft can take off and land.<\/p>\n<p>He said that working with regulators \u201cfrankly, is a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walkers words were echoed by other industry officials at the conference. Asked if U.K. authorities have implemented steps to allow the integration of unmanned aircraft into airspace, Harini Kulatunga, head of solutions for unmanned aerial systems at Airbus, said: \u201cI dont believe so.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Playing catch-up<\/h3>\n<p>The speed of technological change throws up another issue for regulators.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/GettyImages-1148267334-714x525.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An image of the new Amazon delivery drone is displayed during the Amazon Re:MARS conference in Las Vegas on June 5, 2019 | Mark Ralston\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts equally as bad to get ahead of the industry as it is to get behind them,\u201d said Jay Merckle, executive director of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Office at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, citing the risk that legislating too early means doing guesswork on which way the industry will go, and often getting it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Round, head of airspace, air traffic management and aerodromes at the Civil Aviation Authority, asked for patience. \u201cIf we think if we go in anything less than incremental steps, then were probably mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Getting technology and regulations aligned leaves another hurdle \u2014 persuading people that these services are needed.<\/p>\n<p>Convincing them to agree to more noisy objects flying above their heads is a challenge.
