Serbian plans to enhance trade ties with Russia have triggered a backlash from the EU, but Belgrade is standing firm.<\/p>\n
The Balkan country wants to move forward with the signing of a deal with the Eurasian Economic Union, a Russian-led regional bloc, despite warnings from Brussels that the Balkan country would have to withdraw from all bilateral trade accords if it were to join the European bloc.<\/p>\n
A Serbian official told POLITICO that the country is \u201cvery well aware\u201d of its obligations as an EU accession candidate.<\/p>\n
Belgrade has had a trade agreement with Moscow since 2000 and plans to sign an additional agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union, whose members include Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, on October 25.<\/p>\n
Serbian President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 met Monday with Alexander Bocan-Harchenko, the newly appointed Russian ambassador to Serbia, to discuss the signing of the deal, the Serbian official said.<\/p>\n
\nThe country first applied for EU membership in 2009 and has been engaged in membership talks for years.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Brussels, however, hinted that such an extension of economic ties with Russia stands in contradiction to the countrys ambitions to join the EU.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the context of its EU accession negotiations, Serbia committed to withdrawing from all bilateral free trade agreements on the day of its accession to the EU,\u201d a spokesperson for the EUs External Action Service said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The country first applied for EU membership in 2009 and has been engaged in membership talks for years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe EU remains Serbias most important trade partner, covering 63 percent of total trade, with very good dynamics of growth,\u201d the EEAS spokesperson said, adding: \u201cTrade with Russia is less than 10 percent of Serbias total trade.\u201d<\/p>\n
