It makes large companies foreign earnings worth more and exporters goods more competitive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/ma-excitement-and-falling-pound-put-rocket-under-ftse-100\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The FTSE 100 had risen two per cent by 2pm to around 7,700<\/a>, and was also boosted by excitement over mergers and acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Investors are selling the pound after the chances of a no-deal Brexit \u2013 which most analysts think would be economically damaging \u2013 rose dramatically with the election of Johnson by Tory party members as the new PM on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A brutal reshuffle saw Johnson put prominent Brexiteers in some of the most important jobs in government. The new ministers have been briefing the media that planning for no deal is the governments number one priority.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, foreign secretary Dominic Raab said the UK is \u201cturbo-charging\u201d its preparations to leave the European Union without a deal.<\/p>\n<p>Raab told BBC Radio 4s Today programme: \u201cWe want a good deal with EU partners and friends but that must involve the abolition of the undemocratic backstop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The backstop is the mechanism in ex-PM Theresa Mays deal that would prevent a hard border from returning to the island of Ireland. Brexiteers say it means Britain would have to follow EU rules indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Gove, now overseeing Brexit preparations as head of the Cabinet Office, wrote in the Sunday Times yesterday that the EU was unlikely to re-enter negotiations, and so the new administration would \u201coperate on the assumption\u201d of no deal.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Doomsday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSterling has cracked, opening up fresh lows versus the dollar, and it may now be heading for $1.21 or even $1.20 again,\u201d said Neil Wilson of Markets.com.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt increasingly looks like the Boris Johnson government is embarking on an overt policy of brinkmanship.\u201d He said Johnson wants to take Nigel Farages Brexit Party out of the equation and force the EU back to the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson said data shows \u201cspeculators are continuing to add to their short positions on sterling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Strategists at JP Morgan said in a note they were \u201cbearish\u201d on t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/sterling-hits-new-two-year-low-on-no-deal-brexit-fears\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Read More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sterling has fallen to its lowest point in over two years ag..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":128792,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-128791","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
