{"id":128536,"date":"2019-07-26T02:10:25","date_gmt":"2019-07-26T02:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/johnson-ready-to-talk-to-eu-whenever-wherever\/"},"modified":"2019-07-26T02:10:25","modified_gmt":"2019-07-26T02:10:25","slug":"johnson-ready-to-talk-to-eu-whenever-wherever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/johnson-ready-to-talk-to-eu-whenever-wherever\/","title":{"rendered":"Johnson ready to talk to EU whenever, wherever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K. wants to re-enter Brexit talks with the EU \u201cwhenever, wherever they are ready to do so,\u201d Boris Johnson said in his first appearance as prime minister in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Calling for the EU to \u201crethink\u201d its refusal to reopen the Withdrawal Agreement, Johnson said his government would come to the negotiating table \u201cin the spirit of friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he again insisted that a key pillar of the existing deal, the Irish backstop, was \u201cunacceptable\u201d and pledged to \u201cturbo-charge\u201d the U.K.s preparations for a possible no-deal exit on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/boris-johnson-pledges-to-leave-the-eu-on-october-31-no-ifs-no-buts\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">October 31<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Placing his hand on his heart at the House of Commons despatch box, he vowed that his goal was to \u201crestore trust in our democracy and to fulfil the repeated promises of parliament to the people by coming out of the European Union and doing so on October 31.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI and all ministers are committed to leaving on this date whatever the circumstances. To do otherwise would cause a catastrophic loss of confidence in our political system,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cwe will not nominate a U.K. commissioner for the new Commission taking office on 1 November \u2014 though clearly this is not intended to stop the EU appointing a new Commission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said that ways of avoiding a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland could be negotiated as part of the post-Brexit future relationship talks and that \u201cother arrangements are perfectly possible\u201d and compatible with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has said it will not drop the backstop, which under Johnsons plan would leave no-deal as the only option, unless parliament \u2014 which has voted against such an outcome in the past \u2014 blocks him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/michael-gove-appointed-cabinet-office-boss\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Gove<\/a>, the new Cabinet Office minister, has been placed in charge of no-deal preparations, Johnson said, telling MPs that he had instructed the U.K.s top civil servant, Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill, to \u201cmobilize\u201d Whitehall for a \u201cnational effort\u201d to get the country ready to leave in less than 100 days.<\/p>\n<p>He again challenged doubters of the U.K.s ability to prosper post Brexit, saying that by 2050 the country would be \u201cthe greatest place on Earth.\u201d He said that since he was a child he has been told \u201cour time as a nation has passed, that we should be content with mediocrity and managed decline \u2026 time and again with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/johnson-brexit-eu-ready-to-talk-whenever-wherever\/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=RSS_Syndication\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Read More \u2013 Source<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K. wants to re-enter Brexit talks with the EU \u201cwhenever, wherever they are ready to d..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":128537,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-128536","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
