{"id":128129,"date":"2019-07-18T01:30:03","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T01:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/pension-savings-are-being-left-in-cash-after-mg-property-fund-blocks-withdrawals\/"},"modified":"2019-07-18T01:30:03","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T01:30:03","slug":"pension-savings-are-being-left-in-cash-after-mg-property-fund-blocks-withdrawals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/pension-savings-are-being-left-in-cash-after-mg-property-fund-blocks-withdrawals\/","title":{"rendered":"Pension savings are being left in cash after M&amp;G property fund blocks withdrawals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/content\/2018\/10\/prudential-5bb229d37778a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Institutional investors are being blocked from withdrawing money from a major UK property fund, while contributions made by thousands of pension savers into the strategy will be redirected into cash.<\/p>\n<p>Asset manager M&amp;G has stopped investors exiting its \u00a3636m UK Property Fund for up to six months after some clients \u2013 most of which are large pension schemes \u2013 sought to move their money elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/prudential-uk-property-fund-delays-withdrawals-for-up-to-six-months\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City A.M. <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/prudential-uk-property-fund-delays-withdrawals-for-up-to-six-months\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed<\/a> similar restrictions applying to pension-holders with money in Prudentials UK Property Fund, which buys units in the M&amp;G strategy. Withdrawals from the fund have been subject to delays of up to six months since 3 June, although the company says some exceptions are made, for example when customers wish to take retirement benefits.<\/p>\n<p>On 12 July, Prudential made the decision to temporarily stop all new contributions going into the M&amp;G fund, including regular pension payments, saying it will instead redirect the money into a separate cash fund.<\/p>\n<p>Scott White, Prudential UK head of communications, said: \u201cWe always focus on what would be the fairest outcome for workplace pension scheme members, so given that there is a deferral period to withdraw money, we didnt think that it was fair for people to continue to contribute into that fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Property funds have been under pressure in recent months, while regulators have turned the spotlight on illiquid funds promoted to retail investors.
