{"id":127901,"date":"2019-07-16T09:10:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T09:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/gems-jewellery-exports-likely-to-decline-10-15\/"},"modified":"2019-07-16T09:10:07","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T09:10:07","slug":"gems-jewellery-exports-likely-to-decline-10-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/gems-jewellery-exports-likely-to-decline-10-15\/","title":{"rendered":"Gems, Jewellery exports likely to decline 10-15%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kolkata: <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Gems\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gems<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/jewellery\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jewellery<\/a> exports are likely to decline 10-15 per cent year on year in this financial year owing to choppy global economies, high import duty on <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/gold\/commoditysummary\/symbol-GOLD.cms\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gold<\/a> and diamonds, and liquidity crunch in the sector, said industry executives.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lull in demand in overseas as well as domestic markets, said Colin Shah, vice-chairman, Gem &amp; Jewellery Export Promotion Council. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/US-China-trade\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US-China trade<\/a> war is affecting global economies and has slowed down offtake of gems and jewellery. In May, exports dwindled 12.08 per cent in dollar terms and the same trend has continued in June as well.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is unlikely to improve in the coming months and our estimate is that gems and jewellery exports from India will decline 10-15 per cent in the current fiscal,\u201d he said. Shah said that high import duty on gold and diamonds would further affect organised trade. \u201cSmuggling of gold will increase,\u201d he said. In the budget for 2019-20, the government announced an increase in import duty on gold to 12.5 per cent from 10 per cent.
