India, the third-largest economy in Asia, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-08\/facebook-s-libra-currency-faces-skeptical-government-in-india\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considering not allowing the currency to be traded<\/a> at all, according to a Bloomberg report Monday.<\/p>\n<pre><code>In April 2018, all entities regulated by the Reserve Bank of India were &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/rbi.org.in\/scripts\/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=43574\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;banned from dealing in cryptocurrencies and virtual coins&lt;\/a&gt;, although individuals trading currencies like bitcoin remains legal. However, last month it was reported that the Indian government is working on draft laws that would propose a &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/politics\/policy\/draft-bill-proposing-jail-for-cryptocurrency-trades-in-india-causes-stir-1560153606691.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;jail sentence for any crypto users&lt;\/a&gt;. \n\n&amp;quot;Design of the Facebook currency has not been fully explained,&amp;quot; Subhash Garg, India&#039;s Economic Affairs Secretary, told Bloomberg in an interview Saturday. &amp;quot;But whatever it is, it would be a private cryptocurrency and that&#039;s not something we have been comfortable with.&amp;quot; \n\nFacebook last month &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/facebook-unveils-its-libra-cryptocurrency-as-politicians-raise-eyebrows\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;unveiled the global digital coin&lt;\/a&gt;, which will be &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-facebooks-libra-cryptocurrency\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;managed by a governing body called the Libra Association&lt;\/a&gt; and through a wallet named Calibra. Facebook is working alongside 27 launch partners for Libra, including PayPal, &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/visa\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;Visa&lt;\/a&gt;, Uber, Coinbase, &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/lyft\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;Lyft&lt;\/a&gt;, Mastercard, Vodafone, &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/ebay\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;eBay&lt;\/a&gt; and &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/spotify\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;Spotify&lt;\/a&gt;, but aims to have 100 members in the Libra Association by 2020. \n\nLibra \u2014 set to launch in the first half of next year \u2014   is intended to be used to purchase products, send money internationally and make donations. \n\nThe Libra blockchain will be global, but it will be up to the Calibra providers to determine where they will operate the wallet service. It also won&#039;t be available in any US-sanctioned countries, or countries that ban cryptocurrencies. \n\nGarg&#039;s office didn&#039;t immediately respond to a request for comment. \n\n&lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/facebook-unveils-its-libra-cryptocurrency-as-politicians-raise-eyebrows\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;Libra has faced considerable skepticism and pushback&lt;\/a&gt; since being announced, with US and European politicians almost immediately expressing concerns that stem from &lt;a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/facebook-allegedly-knew-of-cambridge-analytica-months-prior-to-public-reports\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"&gt;Facebook&#039;s history of data security problems&lt;\/a&gt;.  \n\nRep.
