The Gibraltar government Thursday<\/a> announced that it had detained a super tanker carrying crude oil to Syria, over concerns that the vessel was breaching EU sanctions.<\/p>\n

The government of the British Overseas Territory said it has reason to believe that the vessel \u2014 the super tanker Grace 1 \u2014 was carrying crude oil shipments meant for the Banyas Refinery in Syria, which is \u201cthe property of an entity that is subject to European Union sanctions against Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the early hours of this morning, Gibraltar Port and Law Enforcement agencies, assisted by a detachment of Royal Marines, boarded a super tanker carrying crude oil to Syria. We have detained the vessel and its cargo,\u201d the government said. The action \u201carose from information giving the Gibraltar Government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of European Union sanctions against Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n
