{"id":124591,"date":"2019-06-26T01:10:07","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T01:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/jeremy-hunt-eu-playing-hardball-because-it-wants-uk-in-customs-union\/"},"modified":"2019-06-26T01:10:07","modified_gmt":"2019-06-26T01:10:07","slug":"jeremy-hunt-eu-playing-hardball-because-it-wants-uk-in-customs-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/jeremy-hunt-eu-playing-hardball-because-it-wants-uk-in-customs-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeremy Hunt: EU playing hardball because it wants UK in customs union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The EU refused to accept workable alternatives to the Northern Irish backstop because it wants the U.K. to stay in the customs union, Conservative leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-48760055\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In an interview with the BBC<\/a>, the U.K. foreign secretary argued the bloc was playing hardball in the talks to negotiate \u201cthe best outcome\u201d for itself despite the technology being there to eliminate the need for the controversial mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>He also took aim at his rival for No. 10 Downing Street, Boris Johnson, whom he branded untrustworthy and accused of setting a \u201cfake deadline\u201d on Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Both Hunt and Johnson have vowed to renegotiate the backstop and use technology to keep tabs on goods flowing across the Northern Irish border to prevent a hard frontier.<\/p>\n<p>Hunt said he was loyal to Theresa May on the backstop \u2014 the insurance policy designed to maintain an open border on the island of Ireland \u2014 but \u201cnever thought that was the right approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the technology to approach the border puzzle in a different way was \u201cready\u201d to go \u2014 despite Brussels and other critics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/advanced-technology-cannot-replace-brexit-backstop-eu-says\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repeatedly insisting<\/a> the necessary measures do not currently exist.<\/p>\n<p>Hunt added: \u201cBut the EU have not wanted to accept this kind of solution because the hope is that we might stay in this thing called the customs union where we have to stick to [their] tariffs.
