{"id":123790,"date":"2019-06-20T17:10:25","date_gmt":"2019-06-20T17:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/sp-500-hits-all-time-high-as-fed-signals-rate-cuts\/"},"modified":"2019-06-20T17:10:25","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T17:10:25","slug":"sp-500-hits-all-time-high-as-fed-signals-rate-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/sp-500-hits-all-time-high-as-fed-signals-rate-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"S&amp;P 500 hits all-time high as Fed signals rate cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The S&amp;P 500 index hit a record high on Thursday, after the Federal Reserve indicated that it could cut interest rates as soon as next month to offset growing risks to global and domestic growth.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. central bank left rates unchanged at the end of its two-day June policy meeting on Wednesday, but pledged to &quot;act as appropriate&quot; to sustain economic health.<\/p>\n<p>Wall Street&#039;s main indexes have gained in recent weeks on expectations of a rate cut and hopes of a revival of trade talks between the United States and China.<\/p>\n<p>The benchmark S&amp;P 500 index, which has risen 7.4% so far in June and is on track to recoup its previous month&#039;s losses, hit an intraday record high of 2,956.20 on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Chairman Jerome Powell&#039;s comments that &#039;the case for additional accommodation has strengthened&#039; was exactly what market participants wanted to hear,&quot; said Robert Johnson, chief executive officer at Economic Index Associates in New York.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;A continued trade war with China could be the catalyst that sends the U.S. economy into recession and rates cuts can be viewed as preemptive strikes by the Fed to prevent that from happening.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Financial stocks were flat, while the energy index jumped 1.98%, the most among all 11 major S&amp;P sectors, as oil prices surged over 3% on renewed tensions in the Middle East after Iran shot down a U.S. military drone.<\/p>\n<p>At 9:53 a.m. ET, the <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Dow-Jones\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dow Jones<\/a> Industrial Average was up 241.66 points, or 0.91%, at 26,745.66 and the S&amp;P 500 was up 28.07 points, or 0.96%, at 2,954.53.<\/p>\n<p>The Nasdaq Composite was up 91.66 points, or 1.15%, at 8,078.98.<\/p>\n<p>The technology sector rose 1.57%, boosting the S&amp;P 500 by the most, with large-cap favorites <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Microsoft\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> Corp and Apple Inc leading the charge.<\/p>\n<p>Also helping tech stocks was Oracle Corp, which jumped 8.15%, after the business software maker forecast current-quarter profit above estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing Co gained 1.01% after the planemaker said it is in talks with other airlines for sales of its 737 MAX after receiving a letter of intent for 200 of the grounded planes from <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/British-Airways\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">British <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/markets\/stocks\/news\/sp-500-hits-all-time-high-as-fed-signals-rate-cuts\/articleshow\/69878548.cms\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Read More \u2013 Source<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n[contf]<br \/>\n[contfnew]<br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/60278104.cms\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ET Markets<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>[contfnewc]<br \/>\n[contfnewc]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The S&amp;P 500 index hit a record high on Thursday, after the F..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":123791,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-123790","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
