Go to online forums, track what&#039;s hot on Twitter and figure out the outrage of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Rant into a camera for 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Profit.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to 2019, where some influential gamers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/youtube\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a> have learned what many others, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2018\/10\/trump-and-politics-anger\/573556\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the president of the United States<\/a>, have figured out: Anger sells. It sells big.<\/p>\n<p>Starting last year, a new cadre of negative YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/games\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gaming<\/a> commentators came to prominence. Almost in unison, they each enjoyed spikes in audience and view counts, attracting hundreds of thousands of subscribers. That translated into millions of views a week as they dissected the video game industry&#039;s missteps, misadventures and controversies. The views get rewarded by YouTube in ad dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Their negativity comes in many forms. Some YouTubers produce a stream of videos criticizing every imaginable fault a game could have. Visual bugs. Awkward controls. Stupid storylines. Others obsess over game developers&#039; attempts to fix glitches. There are commentators who rail against efforts to upsell players, who typically shell out $60 for a game. These microtransactions, as they&#039;re known, can include different character designs, new looks for weapons and additional stories, and are a source of constant irritation for vocal commentators, who see them as a rip-off. Others veer into criticism of outspoken game company executives. Some attacks get personal, criticizing members of the gaming community for their looks or perceived political beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/what-to-expect-at-e3-2019-and-how-to-watch-every-press-conference-live\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic Entertainment Expo<\/a>, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/full-e3-2019-schedule-of-press-conferences-stadia-\/1100-6465962\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">E3<\/a>, will likely prompt all of the above when it kicks off in Los Angeles next week.<\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s no single formula, and the YouTubers have taken different tacks, such as high-production videos with formal scripts or off-the-cuff rambling. But all rely on the same strategy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VW96kQ3e8ik&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=108\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">getting the audience angry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some, including Tyler Denny, who runs the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCXj7EFAEM6PtQLjjh0wfsSA\/videos\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> CleanPrinceGaming<\/a> channel, which has more than 631,000 subscribers, create slickly edited video essays dissecting news reports and rumors of corporate screw-ups that lead to a game&#039;s disappointing release. Some of his most popular videos are a series titled, &quot;[Game Name] Didn&#039;t Just Die, It was Murdered.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCXIvhdNOzEdpdCSxTzsJm6w\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LegacyKillaHD<\/a>, who lists his name as Michael <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/legacykillahd?lang=en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Twitter<\/a> and, like Denny, didn&#039;t comment for this story, posts videos to his more than 510,000 subscribers that include thumbnails written in all-caps: &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5L3iHyvk9Vw\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GAMERS ARE ANGRY<\/a>,&quot; &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V8TSAt6tvVg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DAMAGE CONTROL<\/a>!,&quot; &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZBKP69NBVUE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THE HUGE PROBLEMS<\/a>!&quot; and &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oZYyGPggzp0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HUGE LIES DETECTED<\/a>!&quot; <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/meet-the-angry-gaming-youtubers-who-turn-outrage-into-views\/\" alt=\"anthem-ea-play-e3\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cnet4.cbsistatic.com\/img\/vc4rKeh3j1D-E38kAtwulw_CSZA=\/644x0\/2018\/06\/09\/32557abb-3079-4bfc-8d7d-bfdaee19dba3\/screen-shot-2018-06-09-at-12-00-32-pm.png\" alt=\"anthem-ea-play-e3\" \/><figcaption>\nEA&#039;s Anthem was received with mixed reviews. <\/p>\n<p>                                                     Bioware \/ Electronic Arts                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Click on those videos, and YouTube recommends more like them bearing titles such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MpRA7-LI38w\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Year Activision Blizzard Got $#&amp;! On By The Gaming Industry<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T-U61yqs08U\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Activision Blizzard Is Disgusting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V5vSbw8UVr8\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EA is the WORST Company Ever\u2026 Here&#039;s Why<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LrfdGgY3_sw\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rise and Fall of EA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/activision\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Activision<\/a> Blizzard didn&#039;t respond to a request for comment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/electronic-arts\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EA<\/a> declined to comment for this story.<\/p>\n<p>It&#039;s hard to pinpoint why this torrent of negativity has become so popular. But analysts, researchers and some of the YouTubers themselves told me the video-streaming service&#039;s recommendation programs may share some of the blame.<\/p>\n<p>It&#039;s YouTube that picks the top results when you search. And it&#039;s YouTube that recommends the next video to watch. That automated software &quot;is responsible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/05\/business\/youtube-remove-extremist-videos.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for more than 70 percent of overall time spent on YouTube<\/a>,&quot; The New York Times reported, noting it&#039;s &quot;drawn accusations of leading users down rabbit holes filled with extreme and divisive content, in an attempt to keep them watching and drive up the site&#039;s use numbers.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/google\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>, YouTube&#039;s parent company, rewards this negativity by sending millions of viewers to these channels. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, YouTube said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/youtube-to-ban-supremacist-and-hoax-videos-in-tougher-hate-speech-policy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">take a tougher stand<\/a> against the more toxic elements on all parts of the service. &quot;Everyone on YouTube will be subject to the new hate speech policies, whether it be in videos they post or in other actions like comments or stories,&quot; a YouTube spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past six months, I&#039;ve watched hundreds of these videos, seeing ads from car makers like Volvo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/roadshow\/make\/honda\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Honda<\/a>, consumer brands such as Pringles chips, wireless providers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/sprint\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sprint<\/a> and its subsidiary Boost Mobile, fast food chain Taco Bell and broadcaster CBS, which owns CNET. They came to my screen via YouTube&#039;s software, in this case its automated advertising system that pairs ads with videos, something that has already raised concerns among some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/18\/business\/media\/att-youtube-advertising.html?module=inline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advertisers, who have pulled spending on the site<\/a>. Those ad dollars help drive a cycle that creates, shares, spreads and funds videos further.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;People love negativity,&quot; said Steven Williams, a longtime YouTuber whose channel, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/boogie2988\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boogie2988<\/a>, counts more than 4.5 million subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Williams has attracted hundreds of thousands of people to his videos, including skits in which he plays Francis, an angry, overweight gamer with a lisp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GsqUZkmO-zk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yelling into the camera<\/a> about the industry&#039;s outrage of the day. &quot;Francis is in fact a parody of the angriest gamers,&quot; Williams told me. &quot;The ones who take it all too seriously.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>          People love negativity.          <\/p>\n<p>Steven Williams, aka Boogie2988 on YouTube<\/p>\n<p>Other YouTubers, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/AngryJoeShow\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Angry Joe Show<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/JimSterling\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Sterling<\/a>, have found similar success by mixing in overly dramatic tongue-in-cheek jokes, skits and the occasional positive video. (Neither Angry Joe or Sterling responded to requests for comment.)<\/p>\n<p>But some people took the angry part too seriously, and now they&#039;re trying to become the next big gaming commentators, Williams told me. &quot;We have a whole generation of young kids who were raised on negativity,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mass marketing anger is nothing new. And it&#039;s certainly not unique to YouTube. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/05\/books\/review-fear-trump-in-white-house-bob-woodward.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump reportedly learned<\/a> that his most effective tweets are his most unhinged, Watergate scribe Bob Woodward wrote in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fear-Trump-White-Bob-Woodward\/dp\/1501175513\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fear<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Now the gaming community is manufacturing outrage videos.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#039;re trawling for game news on YouTube, anger is becoming the only emotion you&#039;ll experience in your recommended feed.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/meet-the-angry-gaming-youtubers-who-turn-outrage-into-views\/\" alt=\"fallout-76-7175\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cnet3.cbsistatic.com\/img\/TiMMYDicrOVB0Od-cpJsaUGIQjU=\/1092x0\/2018\/06\/13\/04219884-ff97-4939-baa3-b11fee75e27b\/fallout-76-7175.jpg\" alt=\"fallout-76-7175\" \/><figcaption>\nWhen Bethesda&#039;s post-apocalyptic game Fallout 76 was announced, gamers were excited. It released to mixed reviews and inspired waves of critical YouTube videos.<\/p>\n<p>                                                     Josh Miller\/CNET                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Making an angry YouTuber<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/upperechelon.gg\/about\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Zakrzewski<\/a> said he fell into the game criticism world by accident. Originally, he conceived his company, Upper Echelon, as a &quot;multifaceted gaming organization&quot; when he founded it in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>His YouTube channel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UChI0q9a-ZcbZh7dAu_-J-hg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Upper Echelon Gamers<\/a>, started with tips and guides on how to play Ubisoft&#039;s then-new <a href=\"http:\/\/gamespot.com\/tom-clancys-the-division\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post-apocalyptic paramilitary game Tom Clancy&#039;s The Division<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>\nRockstar&#039;s Red Dead Redemption 2 cowboy game was met with near universal acclaim when it released last year. But some YouTubers didn&#039;t like its online features.<\/p>\n<p>                                                     Rockstar Games                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But last year, when Rockstar&#039;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/red-dead-redemption-2\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Dead Redemption 2<\/a> cowboy game was released to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/xbox-one\/red-dead-redemption-2\/critic-reviews\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near universal acclaim<\/a>, Zakrzewski said he felt a need to shift. The game&#039;s online component that lets you play with friends, then in beta-testing, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/red-dead-2-online-free-gold-bars-this-weekend-alon\/1100-6464601\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticized for not having enough interesting activities<\/a>. Players also complained that the company aggressively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2018\/11\/30\/18119736\/red-dead-online-economy-grind-money-rdr2\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushed them to spend real money<\/a> to quickly acquire new guns, horses or other items needed to play. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/rockstar-is-handing-out-free-red-dead-online-gold-\/1100-6463714\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rockstar has since changed<\/a> the way the game works.)<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It felt like there had been a lot of hype in a bad way,&quot; Zakrzewski told me. And he felt that not enough YouTubers at the time were talking about how predatory Red Dead&#039;s in-game purchases seemed to him. &quot;I decided to lean into that.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>His channel took off. In September 2018, just before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/reviews\/red-dead-redemption-2-review\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Dead Redemption 2<\/a> came out, he rarely broke 1 million monthly views. By November, he was averaging 4 million, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/socialblade.com\/youtube\/channel\/UChI0q9a-ZcbZh7dAu_-J-hg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statistics from SocialBlade<\/a>. He began adding tens of thousands of new subscribers each month.<\/p>\n<p>Zakrzewski, 25, aims to talk in his videos with the same passion he would while playing a game with a friend in front of a TV. &quot;I&#039;ve always viewed the glass as half-empty,&quot; he said. &quot;I&#039;ve always been able to articulate in a negative way.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>That includes when he posted a video criticizing &quot;social justice warriors&quot; (SJWs), a common internet slur for people who advocate for diversity. In a February 2018 video, he discussed how &quot;keyboard warriors&quot; and &quot;political correctness&quot; were threatening to wreck games. &quot;It&#039;s one of the most important concepts I have covered on the channel,&quot; he said at the time. The video, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WMwR6BQCDY0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SJW Culture is RUINING GAMING<\/a>, has nearly 1 million views.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube is his full-time job and he says he pulled in about $35,000 last year through advertisers, recently including Sprint, Honda and Mattress Firm. He has an investment portfolio and other ways he makes up shortfalls when money from ads shown on his videos, of which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/personal-finance\/032615\/how-youtube-ad-revenue-works.asp\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube reportedly takes a 45% cut<\/a>, is lower than he needs.<\/p>\n<p>Zakrzewski didn&#039;t have to look far for inspiration as he ramped up his videos. <\/p>\n<p>Another YouTuber at the channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCCOD-tcFzMSiaNkSUB_KVjQ\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Downward Thrust<\/a>, who publishes under the nickname Tone Loke, was one of the early pioneers of scripted gaming commentary videos. He posted his first video for the channel in 2016 before leaving his career in health care administration the following year to focus on YouTube full-time.<\/p>\n<p>Loke&#039;s original plan was to create video &quot;essays&quot; examining what made games good and bad. He&#039;d already created carefully edited videos dissecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DVdL0rjMBEs\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">different types of game difficulty<\/a>, for example, while also giving reviews for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-9Dzl9vuUTk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">games he loved<\/a>, like the critically acclaimed 2005 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/sony\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sony<\/a> fantasy adventure game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/reviews\/shadow-of-the-colossus-review-a-timeless-classic\/1900-6416845\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shadow of the Colossus<\/a>. He also tried his hand at applying his business background in a video about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wowZ8-Do4UI\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">why games cost $60<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>          When everyone&#039;s doing the same thing, you have to be provocative.          <\/p>\n<p>Tone Loke, Downward Thrust<\/p>\n<p>Then, in February 2017, a video called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TpdAqSmkkZk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is For Honor A &quot;For Goner?&quot;<\/a> took off. His essay, discussing problems with the just-released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/for-honor\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ubisoft battle game<\/a>, attracted hundreds of thousands of views. To promote it, he created a promotional thumbnail with a crashing bar chart and the simple words &quot;Did It Fail?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That video had a complete influence on my channel,&quot; Loke told me. &quot;What I tried to do with that video was remove all the excess words from the thumbnail and I caught onto a good strategy.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>From then on, nearly all the thumbnails for his videos took on that simple dramatic look, though Loke projects a calm and professorial demeanor in his videos. Over time, he said, he felt pressure to be more negative, in part because other YouTubers were amping up the drama to stand out. &quot;When everyone&#039;s doing the same thing, you have to be provocative,&quot; he said. <\/p>\n<h2>Riling up the crowd<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes YouTube videos push past the bounds of aggressive game commentary and into personal attack. This is what happened in 2012, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/gamergate-donald-trump-american-nazis-how-video-game-culture-blew-everything-up\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gamers ganged up on Anita Sarkeesian<\/a>, a feminist media critic, for announcing a series of videos about women&#039;s representation in games.<\/p>\n<p>About a month ago, Jeremy Hambly showed himself on video sitting in front of his computer, surrounded by boxes of popular video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/topics\/consoles\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">game consoles<\/a>. Before long, he was attacking a critic of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/reviews\/days-gone-review-farewell-oregon\/1900-6417130\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Sony&#039;s Days Gone<\/a>, accusing her of using a review she&#039;d written to push liberal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/topics\/politics\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">politics<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/meet-the-angry-gaming-youtubers-who-turn-outrage-into-views\/\" alt=\"e3-days-gone.jpg\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cnet3.cbsistatic.com\/img\/fT1FJwHRDuXL1xd48VqsjA9_oK4=\/644x0\/2016\/06\/16\/724f374d-4b86-462c-af1c-1ae53b5df027\/e3-days-gone.jpg\" alt=\"e3-days-gone.jpg\" \/><figcaption>\nDays Gone, a game about living in a post-apocalyptic world filled zombies, received mixed reviews from some critics. <\/p>\n<p>                                                     Sony                                                 <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The video, posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/thequartering\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TheQuartering<\/a>, his channel, points Hambly&#039;s more than 530,000 subscribers to an online review of the survival-horror game that he says was influenced by the author&#039;s views about diversity. He said she had given the game an unfairly low score and criticized a tweet in which she noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/inkydojikko\/status\/1121459685641474048\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all of the game&#039;s zombies were white<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Keep your politics out of our video games,&quot; he says at the end of the video. A thumbnail image shows a woman with &quot;BUSTED&quot; rubber-stamped across her face.<\/p>\n<p>Hambly&#039;s target was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/profile\/kallie\/about-me\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kallie Plagge<\/a>, a reviews editor at GameSpot, a video game site. (GameSpot is a sister publication to CNET.)<\/p>\n<p>Plagge says she&#039;s used to getting attacked, often with comments by others about her looks rather than the content of her stories. After Hambly&#039;s video was published, her social media accounts overflowed with insults from other users. Some people pored over her Instagram account looking for photos that highlighted Plagge&#039;s perceived physical flaws. It was exhausting, she says.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Multiple people read the review before it goes live, and you do all that work, and then to have people criticize you not even based on that work, but based on who they think you are, is really disheartening,&quot; Plagge said.<\/p>\n<p>Hambly told his audience not to &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8JrEF9CNOd4?t=214\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interact with<\/a>&quot; Plagge. He also said &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-1OXeQzk_1o?t=514\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I disavow<\/a>&quot; the online attacks. Both actions insulated him from a YouTube<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/2802268?hl=en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> policy against inciting harassment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He posted an additional three videos, each about the attacks. In one, Hambly <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-1OXeQzk_1o?t=500\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claimed<\/a> Plagge was making up stories about being harassed. Another bashed a fellow YouTuber for defending Plagge, a practice often called &quot;white knighting.&quot; And he created a video about a blogger who had commented on Hambly&#039;s attacks of Plagge.<\/p>\n<p>Hambly has in the past gone after people he disagrees with, particularly outspoken members of the gaming community and journalists, which he often calls &quot;urinal-ists.&quot; In one case, his attacks against a community member of the card game <a href=\"https:\/\/magic.wizards.com\/en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Magic: The Gathering<\/a> reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kotaku.com.au\/2017\/12\/wizards-of-the-coast-bans-bullies\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contributed<\/a> to Hambly <a href=\"https:\/\/magic.wizards.com\/en\/content\/suspended-dci-memberships\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">being permanently banned starting in 2017<\/a> from participating in official tournaments. (<a href=\"https:\/\/company.wizards.com\/node\/311\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wizards of the Coast<\/a>, which makes Magic, didn&#039;t respond to requests for comment.)<\/p>\n<p>Over the past six months, Hambly has also used his channel to call #MeToo &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NDCkj_ZF128?t=184\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a farce<\/a>&quot; and to criticize companies <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YuwdiE6C7JU?t=123\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for their diversity efforts<\/a>. He used a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/cunt\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vulgar slur<\/a> when referring to Brie Larson, the star of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tags\/disney\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney&#039;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/captain-marvel\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Captain Marvel movie<\/a>, calling her &quot;a cunt&quot; during a now-deleted May livestream on his YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p>On June 3, I asked Hambly for an interview to talk about the world of video game commentary. &quot;You had better be very careful what you write about me,&quot; he wrote in response, &quot;I will pursue legal action should you make any attempt to damage my reputation.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>About nine hours after I received that email, Hambly told his audience in a new video that CNET was planning a &quot;hit piece&quot; on YouTube commentators.<\/p>\n<p>Hambly funds his videos in part through paid comments, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/youtube-super-chat-superchat-api-water-balloons\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">super chats<\/a> in livestreams, selling merchandise with his likeness, and offering a $4.99 per month &quot;membership&quot; facilitated by YouTube.
